XXI. RAILS and BELAYING PINS

Calendar Icon

December 05, 2010

Next is the construction of the Ships Boat and addition of the Ships Boat. I hate to say, but at this step, I did not document much. The Ships Boat are straight forward and were taken from the plans.

Due to the fact that my upper railing is a little wider, I had to make the Pin Racks about 2mm wider. So the 5x2mm Sapelli had be widened to about 7mm x 2mm. Eight holes were made. I used a Dremel tool to make a very tiny pilot hole and then used a pin vise with a 1mm bit to finsh out. The Belaying Pins are from Model Expo are of a size 6mm made of Boxwood.

I am thinking of changing those out to some brass ones from Model Expo. I do not think that I am going to have enough length on the belaying pins to satisfactorily rig them like they should be. Not enough pin lenght underneath the Pin rack.

However, here are the images. (first two 8mm, then the last image is 6mm)

Enjoy !

XXII. THE BARGE (SHIPS BOAT)

Calendar Icon

December 10, 2010

This is the construction of the BARGE or Ships Boat. There is not a lot to say here other than the basic planking principles still apply here too. The Solid Base will be cut off when the planking is done. The instrucitons wanted me to paint the skeleton of the frame first and then sand down the area of the planking to "Fair" the frame just like on a larger hull. The Bulkheads and keel are preformed. The planking is made from supplied 1x3mm Ramin.

Enjoy !

Nothing really here to brag about. The Ramin strips are very fragile - hard to work with. The Strips edges flake and pull of easily. Just one of those things to work around. I guess I hate to go through trouble of ordering my own wood to replace. Just trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
I have some touch up work to do before progressing. I was wanting to be complete with the hull by the end of this year, but since having a bad fall in the attic really set me back. My middle fingers on right hand are still tight and swollen.

Enjoy !

Now,I am adding the false frames at bottom of hull. As you can see from photo, I used hot water flowing on the strips as I bent them into round shape and clamped them together. I needed to do this due to sharp curve at bottom of boat.

Completed the set of ships boats. Now is the time to secure or lash them to the deck. I installed the eyebolts on deck so that I can rig the lines to secure the boats. There is not much documentation on how to do this so I used my imagination.
