III. MAIN MAST PLANS and LAYOUT

Calendar Icon

March 10, 2011

This starts the beginning of building the MAIN Mast. The first step was to gather asmany of the wooden and metal parts and to study the plans. Again, there are NO written instructions on how to go from here.

Enjoy !

Nothing glamorous to show here. Just making the Crosstrees and Trestletrees.

Starting to install the Dead Eyes. This process has taken me the longest. A lot of it is making decisions on how to do this part. Over all, I am not that happy with it. I ordered several sizes of blackened steel wire from Model Expo. Dark Annealed Steel Wire .58mm (24 Gauge).

It has been a while since I have updated and I apologize for this long time. Some of it is a mixture of being burned out, while the other has been struggling with health issues related to my feet. But, I need to press onward and do my best. The rigging of the dead eyes on the tressle trees has been an unpleasant part. There are many ways to perform this task. My limited experience, lack of resouces, and users instructions being vague has left me with little imagination on how to perform the task of installing the dead eyes. Now that I am over half way complete, I think now I have better ways of doing this.
But, once it is done, I simply do not feel like going back and redoing all of that again. So, I am willing to accept the level of my accomplishments.

The Main Mast components are just about complete. There are a few other items to install before I install the blocks.

THE YARDSLING HAS BEEN REDONE. HOWEVER, I LEFT THESE IMAGES JUST FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES.

The Main Mast is fitting or rigged with a Yard Sling. I had to perform research to find out if this was true before I rigged it. I found some information in the book "How to Build First-Rate Ship Models from Kits" by Ben Lankford on Page 76 for those that have a copy of this book. Of which I highly recommend. However, the problem is that I am not really sure of the historical accuracy. Just like other cross roads I have been on with this build, I have to make the best of it.

The sequence of images are the details of how I made the loop of the Yard Sling. I am not saying that this is the correct way of performing this task, but it works in my situation. I had no other elements to go by. I hope that this helps someone with the same situation.

THE YARDSLING HAS BEEN REDONE. HOWEVER, I LEFT THESE IMAGES JUST FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES.

These images show the completion of the Main Mast with Rigging. However, I found that I have a slight mistake in the Yard Sling in which I intend to correct. More details later on the corrections.

EDIT: TYPO ERROR. .12mm is the CORRECT SIZE. If I remember, I purchased this from Model Expo a very long time ago. The .12mm DID NOT COME WITH KIT.

As promised, I decided to redo the Yard Sling. Several problems with the one I made earlier. Size and proportions too large. Loop too large, etc.

The Rigging line is made of two different sizes of thread. The larger inner thread is .8Ømm and the smaller outter thread to wrap around is .12mm.

A mandrel is used to keep the shape of the loop. The loop has an inner diameter of about 3mm.
