XIV. THE FOREMAST YARDS: Main, Top, Lower Topgallant, Upper Topgallant.

This is the beginning of building the Yards. I transferred the 1:1 measurements over to an 8mm dowel. As you can see from the photos, I had to use a belt sander and a small drill press outfitted with a mini drum sander to create the curves. The belt sander was used to shape the taper of the yards on each side. Very little pressure was applied when holding the yard up against the belt sander. The dowel was rotated not too slow, but not too fast. Care is taken to not sand any "flats" on the dowel. It can be easy if you be careful. Of course, the ideal is to have a lathe.
I believe it will not be long before I am able to aquire one.
Good luck with your building !

Enjoy !

This part, I am adding the rope walks and the stirrups are next. I tried my hand at making a splice at the ends of the rope walk, but they are not that noticeable. Next I am adding the stirrups. The instructions call for wire. I do not approve of the way OcCre has in their instructions. I am going to go by Patersons method which is pretty much standard. I will take a .53 diameter black wire and wrap it with one thread of black cross stitch thread.

Continuation of Foot Ropes and Stirrups. These were redone after several tries. I used a wire for inner core of stirrups. The rigging line will not have enough weight and stiffness. The wire is a .37mm Ø and the line is a .15mm Ø wrapped around the wire. Enough lenght is made before hand to make sure the stirrups are easy to work with. I seized the ends near the Yard as usuall. I then pulled back some thread to allow for a loop for the foot rope to pass through.

Continuing the construction of the yards. In this series of images, you can take note of the way I decided to rig the block ends. I drilled a small hole in the end of the block of where the two or one line will insert into. This also concluded the construction of the lower foremast yard.

Continuing the construction of the yards. This time, I am adding the Sails. It took me a while to decide how to do this. I studied various ways. I did not want to have the Sails down. I wanted them to be either furled or stowed. I did not like the stowed as the sails must be somewhat tight and they must be rolled and secured on TOP of the yard. I would rather have my sails as if they have been just lifted, but yet not stowed.
The Sail material that came with this kit is really good, but it MUST be managed. If you use the entire Sail, then it will be too THICK. You can not use all the Sail material. So, therefore I devised a solution of cutting the Sail about 1/3 to 1/2 of itself. This reduces the Bulk.
The preceeding images really do not demonstrate the step-by-step process as I was prototyping. I promise, check back and I WILL have a step by step. But, I want to make sure I have the process down before I show it as I do not want to be confusing.
Thanks for watching. You are always welcome to email me with any questions at donnie@shipsofscale.com

Continuing the construction of the yards. This is the Foremast Yard Top Sail. These images demonstrate the use of a Sherline Lathe to taper the yard, and construction of the Parrels. I know that the Parrels in real life are not brass, but I could not resist trying to make these with the lathe.

Continuing the construction of the yards. This begins the addition of the sail.

I was asked to demonstrate the steps involved with the method of furling the sails. I want to be clear and say that this procedure or method might not be suitable for you, or in fact, you may have many other ways besides this way to produce the same effect.

I had a decision that I had to make at the beginning of all of this and that was to either furl or not to furl, stow, or just leave partially furled. The way I chose was to depict that the sails had just been furled - then naturally, the next step (as far as I am aware of) would be to stow the sails (actually on top of the yards - very tightly). Well, this appearance although accurate, just did not appeal to me.

So, therefore I chose this way. Another decision I was faced with was to use the sails that came with the model, or to use some type of cloth or tissue paper. I think the tissue paper would have given a more realistic furled shape, but then the tissue did not have the character of the sewn cloth.

So, therefore, I opted to literally chop the sails down to "create" a furled sail. With this being said, I also rigged the sails completely as the rigging virtually stays anyway.

At any rate, I am sure that most of you will be scratching their head at this method I chose. Its not for everyone - but it was for me to try and to manage all this. The sails were just too thick - as I tried to furl them without chopping them up.

Thanks for tuning in and
Enjoy !!!

As time goes by, there might be some changes as the rigging diagram in this kit seems to vary from the conventions. I will keep updates.
