HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. Thanks- I always appreciate your input- no no Nike. Here are pics of my lines without the direct sunlight. It’s 11am and a beautiful day so probably more bright than it’s display area. I have taken pics of the lines which I sometimes see a little fuzz when the pics are taken with the sunlight behind. View attachment 352679View attachment 352681View attachment 352682View attachment 352684View attachment 352686View attachment 352688View attachment 352689View attachment 352691Which lines are you referring to as if they are easy to replace and are too fuzzy I will do this? The natural lines are not kit lines and do cost a little. Cheers Grant
Brilliant! :)

I wasn't being smart or trying to be funny. Following your build it's been obvious you strive for perfection. On that note I wondered that should there be any leftover fuzzy ropes whether it was your intention to eventually replace them. That's all. :)

Good morning. Thanks for this. I really do appreciate your involvement. I certainly never read your post as being funny or critical, however when I Re read my post I can see it seems defensive and reactionary- that wasn’t my intention. Sorry for that.
You are Correct- fuzzy ropes drive me mad. My non kit ropes look amazing (I am really happy with them)but every once in a while in a close up photo a little fuzzyness appears. All my photos were to show them as they really are.Once again sorry re the post. Tip to Grant- re read your post before posting ROTF
Cheers Grant
Fuzzy ropes? Try running them through beeswax.
Good morning John. I do run them through beeswax. Perhaps on the smaller 0.4mm and 0.3mm lines I don’t do it enough. It’s a fine balance as I want to keep the “pattern” of the thread and beeswax does distort this a little- maybe the beeswax I use as well. Cheers Grant
Hi,
What do you use to take these great photos? They are so clear. Please don't say cellphone. lol
Good morning Jack. Thank you. I do- Apple 11.ROTF Cheers Grant

Hi Grant. I like the different kind of layouts of the little boats: hanging, standing, stacked …… that’s a pleasure for the eyes.
Regards, Peter
Good morning Peter. Thanks. I do too. :)
I adopted the same credo on the Vasa!!! At some point you just need to push it across the finish line rear bumper dragging in the dirt...
ROTF. Good morning Paul- love the analogy. True story pushing I am:D
I don’t think that a model is ever 100% complete. There is always something that catches your eye and ……:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Good morning Jan. True story. There are some small things I am already debating to add or play with. However once my boats, some more nun bouys, flags and my stern cabin are done I am going to call it done :D:D
It looks like in the depiction the seats have been removed so the smaller launch can snuggle inside the larger boat. What are your thoughts? Or maybe the depiction is in error?
Good morning Vic. Super good to hear from you:D. I agree with you. It is the one thing which is my doubt doing the boats this way. The little cutter looks high perched on top of the Launch. It could be how I made the Launch, my seats may be too high. I’m not sure if the removed the seats when these boats are stored
Also, should the two boats be located on the starboard side instead of the port side? It looks like the hanging boat came from the port side. This isn't really a critique, just a question. I know you've done some exquisite work and research concerning this build.
Ahh.. I see what you mean, it is just the angle of the photo does give that illusion- here a photo from the front: (The 2 on port are not seated or positioned yet- just plonked on :))

Victory has been rebuilt so many times that there really is no original left of the ship. Really no one knows for sure what the original ship looked like. Any model built today is just an interpretation of what they think it looked like.
Good morning John. Thank you for these posts. I was lucky enough also to get a very old Sergal kit. It was fun to work with this.

If I knew what I was doing when I eagerly opened this kit almost 2 years ago, a copy of Longridge and the Anotomy of the Victory would have been bought for sure. Grants Victory is a partly research and self created version of this ship so I have had fun doing this. When I started I didn’t even know what a butt on a deck was let alone realise any pattern existed ROTF

Agreed, the Victory has had many faces, colours, and rebuilds over its time. I have seen some builds where one or two have researched a specific time period and built incredible models. Thanks for looking in. Mostly I have had a blast creating Grants Victory.

Cheers Grant

Speaking about obsession there are a few things that really do bother me, fuzzy ropes and thick footrope diameters. These two things are up front and center when viewing any rigged model. I know that it is a little late to do anything about it now on your Victory but as far as I can see it is not very visible when viewed from a scaled distance anyway. What I have done in the past is use a butane lighter and just singe the fuzz off the larger diameter ropes. Not recommended for interior use, however.

Hi, Grant Remember that there is a shipwrights rule about planking the hull using a four-step methodology as well as the distance between butts but off hand, I can't remember what these are. (I'm 82). Cheers! John.

Good morning John. When I started out this venture, green behind the ears, I was just going to build a kit. Joining SOS was the best and my ideology shifted and so many guys helped and encouraged me to build a more accurate and detailed ship. It is very addictive this hobby and I have grown to love it. I am far removed from experience builders from a skill and knowledge point of view however I am improving and starting to understand these ships. Thank you for your compliment and stay well. Cheers Grant

Good morning.

The starboard nun bouys. Done. :D. Pretty much same as port.

And then……

The flags. I am going to use the flags provided in the kit. They are poly, but I am pretty happy with them.

The issue is they are one sided, with the starboard side being more dull. The consternation is - I have made the starboard side of my ship the display side. I either redo the Pinnace hanging from the port quarter Davit or accept the dull flag side or make new flags.

I will have the flags curled so I don’t know how this will go in a dull/bright appearance either. Play time let see.
Hmmm…..
Cheers Grant

I pressed the "laugh" button, because I don't think that anybody will be able to tell the difference between the Port and Starboard sides - except you ...!

Have them flying the opposite direction - you don't have sails so who is to say what direction the wind is blowing... Or maybe I don't understand the issue???

quick question, if you don't mind. When you look at the scale of your model, are the sizes of the flags within scale too? I remember doing the Mirage and I didn't include the flags because I found them too big for the ship.

Nice looking flags. Do you need to have them flying straight out (with curls) or can you droop them in such a way the dull side is hidden in folds but the effect of the full colours is outwardly still there? Deceive the viewer’s eye in other words.

On the beeswax subject, I was taught one you have coated them with one or two draws thru the was, pull them thru finger tips held tight to help press them into the rope and hold down the fuzz. Doing this quickly also heats up the was a bit to help it sink into the rope instead of just covering it up.
