Does anyone know where I could purchase an assortment of rigging thread aka scale rope. I'm having a hard time visualizing the size and look of the offerings on line and would do much better if I had some pieces to compare and " touch and feel.

Here are some good sources. You should choose between polyester rope and cotton rope. Each has certain advantages. Cotton has a less shiny surface, but is weaker and has less of a lifespan. Polyester knots require securing with glue, but is more elastic, so over time it is less likely to go slack for lines under tension such s stays and shrouds.

And last but certainly not least:

It's not a question of cotton vs poly it's just that I can't visualize what size " rigging ' should be used where.

Hi Bob, you mention in your post “visualizing the size and look” of line. Try contacting Ben @BenD of Ropes of Scale. He has colour and size sample cards. I received the cards from him after placing a sizeable order not long ago but he might sell them too. He’s great to deal with.

Yes I sent him an email a week or so ago but haven't heard back yet. I'll wait a few more day's and try again .

Hi Bob,

Sorry about the delay, I've been painting all weekend and had no time to respond to emails. I found yours in my spam box for some reason.

I might have some of those sample cards left if you are interested.

Cheers

Just heard from Ben at Ropes of Scale. He has graciously offered to help me out.
Thanks to all who responded.
I concur that Ben's scale rope is one of the finest ropes for modelers, not that he has all available sizes in both: cotton and Poly, he also offered right and left twist ropes! BTW, the exceptional service and affordable shipping from Canada are worth mentioning.

Another fine collection of scale ropes is Dry-Doc (link above), He has all available sizes and great shipping rates. Yet, he offers the most rigging components including violing blocks, cleats PE hooks, and eyebolts.

Thanks Kurt. I have always used James Lees' ratios but this looks to be easier once the mast size is determined. Lees gives the ratios for various years to determine the length of the main mast which can then be used to determine the diameter and then can be plugged into the Czech spreadsheet, which I have downloaded.

Maybe not for everyone, but as there are dozens of rope sizes on a ship, making your own is not difficult. Syren offers the rope rocket and videos on how to use it for making your own rope. Nothing fancy but it works and is not expensive compared to other systems. https://syrenshipmodelcompan.com/ropewalk.php

I bought that rope walk. It's simple and very nice.

Do you know how to measure the size of the rope by wrapping it around a dowel 10 times and dividing the measurement by 10? Then you can use the ratio size of the model to determine the ratio between the original ship's rope and the one you purchase. I believe people have shown the size of ship rope for various purposes in their logs before. There are also books on rigging that show the size of ropes. If you like, I or one of the other regulars could probably find it for you.

Everyone, this is a question that continually comes up in my model groups. Given that model manufactures use scale, 1/96 or 1/72, and not mm or cm mentioned in the manufacturer's links provided, has someone in this group created a table which would assist in buying mm cotton or polyester rope corresponding to scale? If not, is this a major research project of going from a 13" hawser, reducing it to 1/96, converting it yet again to cm, then mm, and then looking for the best fit? Please let us know as reinvention of the wheel is at the bottom of the list! Many thanks
