Hi everyone
I’m a Brit ex-pat now living in LA. Now moved into my 60’s & feel modeling is again for me having made countless Airfix kits in my younger days.
I feel wooden ships is the way forward & as I haven’t done much since my teens might be leaning on you guys quite a bit so sorry in advance!

That’s one reason we are here, to be helpful.

Welcome Joe.

If you haven’t found it yet from the home page, look out for an entire section of the forum on getting started.

Welcome to the SOS group Joe. Don't know what type of vessels you are interested in, but some of the members on this site build more modern type ships and are very interested in operational as well as static display models. Always willing to help.

For my first ‘major’ build I’m hoping to tackle the Viking longship Oseberg, my step daughter lives in Norway & I’m lucky enough to have seen the original first hand. I am torn which kit to tackle as both seem to have their flaws.

I’m currently awaiting the Lowell Grand Banks Dory kit, just to ease me back into modeling. I’m feeling a bit daunted by wood kits considering my younger years were spent on Airfix, however I’m pretty proficient with tools & woodwork around the house so I’m sure I’ll be fine if I take my time.

Thanks for showing interest Jim

Hey Joe, I can totally relate—I also started with plastic models and still enjoy working on them alongside my wooden ship projects. Wooden ships take more time, but the result is so rewarding! Starting with a longship sounds like a fantastic idea. It's not too big and provides a great opportunity to build up experience. Wishing you lots of fun and success with your build!

Joe, the Amati Drakkar is a nice one, and not expensive. Didn't take me very long either.

As having lived in the L.A. basin for 30 years, and moved out in 2091, you have my condolences. All kidding aside, enjoy the area and good luck with your search…
