Hi to all members,

My name is Andy and I live in the Lake District in West Cumbria, England. For the past fifteen years my hobby was tying fishing flies for competitions in the Fly Dressers Guild and Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine, plus a little fly fishing too,but that I wasn't very good at. I needed a new challenge and after much thought decided that model ship building might be fun to do. ( In hindsight I wish I had found this hobby earlier in life). I bought my first ship last Christmas which was HMS Endeavour from Artisania Latina and this I completed last month. As a complete novice I picked up a lot of tips and advice from watching the build log of John Aliprantis on Youtube. As John agreed in one of his videos I found the planking really hard but eventually ended up with something I would rate as passable. I did manage to put a few LED lights on the ship, mainly in the officers quarters

Having completed the Endeavour I looked for another ship to build and eventually decided on HMS Victory from Caldercraft which has now arrived but I will not be starting until after Christmas. From what I have read it looks like quite a project to take on but one I am really looking forward to.I believe the finished ship would be greatly enhanced by the addition of LED lighting in both the gun ports and the officers accommodation, so prior to the build beginning I need to research how to do this as I don't think this is covered in the manuals supplied. If anyone has any experience in this topic, or ideas and suggestions then I would greatly appreciate their input on things such as what size LED's to use (3mm/5mm) and voltage, parallel or series and best ways to mount the LEDS. Is it best to take the wires out through the keel of the ship (as per John Aliprantis build log video. Once again any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Will now try and add a photo of my first attempt HMS EndeavourDSCN1890.JPG at this new hobby. (the small plastic thing at the front is the Marie Rose which my wife bought me from the local kids toy shop for me to practice on before I started HMS Endeavour!!!)

Many newcomers to ship modelling are put off by the patience and dexterity necessary for working with very thin thread with tweezers while rigging their models. Your fly tying hobby puts you a leg up on most, and the experience shows with your beautiful Endeavor. Welcome to the forum Andi!

Hi Russ

Many thanks for your kind comments. Fly tying does take an enormous amount of time, patience, and concentration in order to get things exactly right, especially when tying for competitions and the bronze/silver /gold awards of the Fly dressers guild, when sometimes I would tie the same fly 15/20 times in order to get it as perfect as possible. So yes, there are parallels with Model ship building and why I think HMS Victory is going to take me quite a long time to complete

Regards
Andi
