Naval History Quiz

Who went to sea on civilian cargo ships before later changing careers and traveling to space?

The Battle Sinope, both sides had steam propelled war ships so the answer does not qualify. Neither of those two navies fit the answer.

Sorry Allan. Just thinking out loud. I don't know how to delete a post.
I thought maybe you had the answer but accidently deleted before posting. Stuff happens :) We can edit posts but why can't we just delete them? This already can be done by the moderators so it is in the program in one form. I wonder why not allow us to delete our own posts??

Actually I posted a reply without thing. I then panicked thing I had just revealed my ignorance.
I think we have all done that, I know I have, especially if I have had more than two fingers of my favorite Irish, Redbreast.

"For the first and only time in history, wind-powered warships held their own against steam-powered ones" What were the two navies involved in this action?
According to Wikipedia they were the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy (didn't know either had a "Navy") in 1843.

Is he Mark Kelly? ;)

Yessir Mark served as a cadet during his sea year at the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY then went navy and subsequently the space program, as did his brother Scott. Scott could have fit many of the descriptions above as I believe he graduated from Fort Schuyler and would have gone to sea on the Empire State V.
