Hello,

This will be my first build log here at Ships of Scale, and my second build. I finished a Corel Vasa about six months ago – I did bash the kit…

Intend to bash - as best I can - this one as well including;
1) Show lower, upper and weather deck framing details by leaving out some of the deck planks from each deck.

2) Will try my hand at coppering the hull, as well as adding lights.

3) Scratch build much of what the kit provided.

===================

Kit seems to be well thought out. I would consider this one (to me) as a basic to intermediate skill level kit. Included carriages and gun port frames and doors are pre-made of metal. The subject is certainly interesting.

I like the included dark timbers, not so liking the white woods, - prob. won’t use in any case.
Instructions are simple, and the mast and rigging sheets are excellent.

So: first steps are to add a face to the front facing frames,
ordered some veneer woods (without glue backing) from eBay.
Had NEVER thought of this as a perfect addition for detailing certain areas.

Will also use Longridge as a reference – close enough I would think. That said oak timbers seem hard to find. I don’t have a belt sander machine. No big deal it will only be for the keel – Veneers are coming for the side framing work.

PS: Here are a few of shots of the completed Vasa up first FYI

Cheers,

Many thanks for starting this building log - interesting project - especially to bash the existing kit elements to reach a better model.

The Anatomy of Nelson´s ships - I think it is from Longridge - is a very good source to get knowledge about british ships. I do not know in detail if and where were the differences in construction to spanish ships (french vs british I would know some)

Please be careful with the photo of the real ship with the hanging knee etc. -> This seems to be from a replica-ship - in contemporary ships, they did not use washer and screws, they used iron bolts for the knees and iron and / or wooden treenails for the planks and thick stuff
=> so the appearance of these connection elements would be much much smaller in diameter (maybe like the screwnuts on the photo)

One idea:
Think about maybe to use some thin veneer to cover the two outside face-sides of the frames . with this you could show the floor, futtocks etc. with a correct direction of the grain of the wood - somehow like it is shown on this page 19 - the grain of the original kit frames is really not the best o_O

Zoltan: Thanks for your kind words, as well as your recommendation regarding posting some finished jpgs of the Vasa at completed builds. I spent quite a bit of time looking at content there – Whoa some absolutely amazing works on display, such excellent talents here at SofS.

Uwek:
Thanks for your thoughts – much appreciated.
Yes, Longridge is the Victory builder's "bible" – That said for the false keel area of this build – using it as a generic guide is appropriate
IMO.

Yes as well, the photo of the interior of that gun deck is indeed for a replica. The well-known Poltava 1712 Russian ship of the line.

Here at SofS there is reference to this amazing project as well (washers and screws noted – intended as a general guide) In any case I don’t intend on fully detailing the inner gun deck wall timbers because so much to the details would be lost from view once the three gun decks are slid into place - Especially towards the back area.

Here is an update on, yes the poor kit supplied frames and working with veneer covers.

Two very last shots of the Vasa – also added dummy carriages to both gun decks, as well as working parrel ropes.

Thanks for dropping by, for the likes and comments

Regards,

Michael

Awesome !! So, where did you get the 1/32 black tape from ? Did you cut your own tape to that size ? What type of tape ? sorry to ask so many questions.

Donnie

Hello,
Donnie, Thanks for your nice words & dropping by.......

BTW: Your Santisima build is how I found your site; Superb build indeed. That ship has been on my wish list for a long time.

The tapes were gotten from this source. They stock many diff. sizes and colors

Continuation of facing the front frame with veneers.

Hudge improvement of the ribs. If you leave this open I would thickening the frames in this section as the real frames were much more solid.

Maarten,

Thanks indeed - and yes noted - working on a plan regarding much closer vertical spacings for that small open area.Thinking (ahead) might do something like it on the weather deck - whenever I actually get there haha

Cheers,
