Try "The Onedin Line. Ran on British TV in the 70's. Lots of tall ships, mainly focused on the merchant trading fleet in the 1880's.

Have a look at the olds ones, Yellowbeard, Crimson pirate, Polanski's Pirates, Cutthroat island , Mutiny on the bounty. They are lots of fun oh and Treasure island of course. All pre POTC. For series there is the captain cook series,

Check out the Hornblower series. There were eight episodes, based on the C.S. Forester novels.

Try the movie "Heart of the Sea". It is about the true story of a whaling ship and its sinking. The book "Mobey Dick" was written as fiction about this true incident. The movie was very exciting and realistic.
