HMS Endurance Build . . .

This Endurance kit was my first build. And if it hadn't been for this kit I would never have begun ship modeling.

The story of the Endurance is without a doubt one of the most remarkable survival stories ever. Although most of it unfolded after the sinking of Endurance. The often repeated fact that the complete crew was saved has contributed largely to the legendary status of this expedition. What most people do not know is that shortly after their rescue, many of them very killed in WW I. Another less know fact is that there was another ship in this expedition, SY Aurora (that was also employed by Douglas Mawson in the 1910 Australasian Antarctic expedition). Three of it's crew perished, so one cannot say all members of Shackleton's Imperial Antarctic Expedition were saved. One can say however that all crew under direct command of Shackleton were saved. The story of Aurora (The Ross Sea Party) is hardly less astonishing than the story of Endurance.

Good luck with your build, I will keep an eye on it.

Hope I will be able to do as well as yours. Beautiful build.

Over the past few days, I got the bulkheads installed. Then I dry fit the decks and found out the fourth bulkhead from the bow was not installed all the way down. Needed to remove it and reglue it for the deck to fit flat. Now on to planking the decks.

Almost been a couple of weeks since I posted anything. Decks have been planked, glued in place and finished with a matte finish. Plus I got the frames together for one of the lifeboats.

Sanded down the bulkheads and the hull is ready to plank. Installed the bulwarks and have painted them.

Was able to finish a second lifeboat. These need to be sanded and planked now.

Now comes the hull planking. While doing that I will put together the frames for the other two lifeboats so they will be able to plank also.

The shipyard will be closed this week for holiday. Hope to visit a museum with the model ship collection that inspired we to try building wooden ships. The museum my grandfather took me to as a child. Hope to take some pictures and post some them to the forum.

Hey Rebus,

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. That doesn't look too bad already. I'm glad you're building another kit. I'll stick with you and take a look at your build report.

Good luck and best wishes

After returning from holiday break, was able to get some planking done the past two days. Going along much better than my first time of planking. I'm pleased with the way it is going together.

Hi, Rebus. Nice progress. I’ve not built this kit, and I’m surprised to see the planking stop at the aft-most bulkhead. Will that be finished with an unplanked filler block?

Namabiiru, yes after the last bullhead is two stacks of plywood pieces to make up two filter blocks.
