Axel Thorsen 1810 in scale 1/72 build by Dubz Modelling World

Building the stern ... filler time. Nothing fits here, nothing. No mention in the instructions were angles needs to be sanded and or else... The stern parts shown in the manual are completely different from the lasered ones, oversized and much more rounded. I also had to "fix" the shortend planks issue, as I wrote this part should have been done BEFORE planking.

Step 10 - A "fun" part and so a long post. A very complex part with lots of angles has to be build with nothing then a single image in the instructions. Joke. No drawings, no angles, no marks and a f******* d**n instruction..




Unfortunately, there are virtually not much sources, especially when it comes to details. I have Marquardt's original plans, then there is a paper model with some pictures, a very well-built model with pictures but many differences in detail, and two small black-and-white images of Marquardt's construction (which also differs from his plans in some details). So there is a lot of room for interpretation.

First, I had to determine the total width of the object and exactly what needed to be removed from the bulwark (I have no idea why the 3D-printed cover wasn't adjusted accordingly already...).





The side wall was then sawn freehand along the markings.


Fits.






Continue customising, step by step.






Filling and sanding.








There wasn't enough wood at the front, so something had to be added.






Grind in the rounding (still needs more )








Ready for airbrushing











Next step will be glueing the part, then filling and airbrushing again where needed.

The laser printed decking is growing on me ...

The model is good and the execution is also good, but I can say for sure: you have much greater potential to build a complex PoF model yourself from a complex kit or even from scratch using plans. I'm sure you'll do a great job! I'd love to see something great from you. I loved your work on your website!

I've often been asked why I don't build from scratch. The reason is that I just don't like it :-( I need a "starting point"; I don't wanna think too much at the beginning, I want to begin (well, I have to think anyway sooner or later, but a bit later is better... hehe).

Also with a little one on my side (she will be four years old in a few weeks .... ) I have very spare time. But maybe some day ...

B6 defines the wide of the front gunport. At least it should as there are no drawings of such a complex part.

And it seems the gunport part is too wide now


Otherwise when comparing the instructions drawing and what I built it looks quite similar in size.




Gunport has the exact same size as the stern ones. Coincidence?




I checked everything again, and the way I did it, it "must" be correct. You can see in the picture the angle I had to saw for the part; I didn't saw away too much, just what the angle required.



If I had done it so that the etched part would fit, there would be a huge gap because the 3D-printed hull would be "wrong". Basically, however, according to the original plans, it seems that the gunport is a little too wide even it is now the exact shape as the gunport at the stern. F*** it, nothing I am willing to chance, it tells the story. I will split the PE part ;-)

Anyway another example for not testing kit designs. It's frustrating ... I feel like an alpha tester though ... haha

Looks faster now!

I can tell you, 37 knots now and the contact pressure also ensures that the guns are aligned more precisely... if only they'd had me as a shipbuilder back then. Pure innovation, Norway World Empire we would have .
