Seagull Sails.JPGHi ...... I have been trying to positively identify the sails on the Brigantine Plan attached. I am still a little confused! Can anyone help and also guide me towards an appropriate Pin Tail diagram.

First, there is no such thing as positive identification; nautical terminology varies by locality and by era. Also, the rigging of any individual vessel, including the arrangement of the pin rails, is subject to the preferences of the master and the boatswain. But here's my try, from fore to aft and bottom to top.
  • flying jib
  • jib
  • fore topmast staysail
  • fore staysail
  • fore course (foresail)
  • fore topsail
  • fore topgallant sail
  • gaff foresail
  • main topmast staysail
  • (gaff) mainsail
  • main gaff topsail
Fair winds!

Thank you so much for your reply. I had identified some of the sails, but got confused with the jibs and fore staysails.

Is there a “generic” rigging / pin rail that would be a good starting point.

KMSvideo…….thanks I have this publication. I guess the nearest arrangement would be the two masted US Scooner. I will examine this more closely. Thanks for your assistance.
