H.M.S Queen Mary battlecruiser 1/200 (3d printed )

Hello Steve,
my ship models are from various ebay stores. I would however say the pink resin kits are vastly superior than the grey resin models. Much more detail and better looking deck planking.

Here is a rather disappointing earlier build of mine with the grey 3D resin kit. You can see the deck planking is over scale and looks wrong.

Its the battlecruiser IJN kurama.

I am new to resin 3D printing and am trying to better understand how resin color affects print quality and performance.
Do manufacturers categorize or formulate resins primarily by color, or is color mostly cosmetic once the base resin type is the same? Specifically, is there a general reason why gray resin is so commonly recommended and used, compared to colors like orange or other translucent or bright resins?

I’m trying to understand whether gray resin tends to print more reliably (in terms of detail, exposure consistency, or ease of tuning), or if orange and other colors can perform just as well when properly calibrated. Any insight into how color influences light penetration, curing behavior, or print accuracy would be greatly appreciated. What about the black resin?

Jim, I cannot answer your queries as I just don’t know. I think the different coloured resin has to do with the manufacturer as identification.

Hello friends,
It’s been a month since I updated my build log. I have spent 2 days masking up the deck for painting with hundreds of small squares of tape. Perhaps it’s my autistic personality, but I found this task rather enjoyable.
The following photos are of my efforts in masking and painting the main grey colour. I hope the tape peels away cleanly.

I’m needing to improve my photography skills as the last couple of photos are poor quality.
Anyway, thanks for looking in.

Geez mate, your masking skills are next level. Not sure I would have the patience, despite my OCD.
:)

Hello friends,
Been busy at my workbench this week and made some good progress on my build. I have assembled and painted the turrets, superstructure and funnels and fitted them permanently in position.
I am currently adding photoetch handrailings to the model. There’s no photoetch included with these 3D printed kits, so I purchased some generic railings in 1/200 scale.

A few photos of my progress below. I still need to add the rest of the photoetch railings, ships boats, davits and other deck fittings. Thanks for looking in.
