Milling on a Drill Press

I eyeball them the wool is cut into 3/4 X 3/4 X whatever length I need, I bore a hole down the center and slip the wood onto a mandrel and turn it into a spindle. I can cut beads, valleys, coves or kerfs for grip. the finish on them is a friction wax and on the bullet pen I used CA glue built up 8 layers shaved all the high spots off with a Skew chisel and Polish the bajesus out of it that finish is super durable and will resist fingerprints and most scratches pretty well for many years of use.

Hi Joe ordering items as you sugested, question on the collet set on amozon they have sets ranging from $45.00 down to about $17.00, witch one should I opt for do not mind spending the money on the most expensive set, if you think it is the best option HAVE PURCHASED CHEAPER ITEMS ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY WERE NOT SO GOOD SO HAD TO REBUY THE OTHER, rather get it right the first time. THANKS Don

Hey Don the collet set will only be beneficial to you if you can remove the chuck from your drill press or if you have an actual milling machine. the collet set uses a tapered shaft Mt1 or Mt2 taper to go in place of your normal drill chuck. Most small drill presses don't have that tapered spindle to be able to accept the collet chuck. you can check your drill press to see if the chuck is fit into the spindle by taper but I seriously doubt it will be most small drill presses use a bolt on chuck. the collet set is good for precision work with small tooling cutters like those that will fit a dremel, but they can just as easily be chucked up into any drill press chuck. If you can send me the model number and make of your drill press Ill see if it uses a tapered spindle or if the chuck is bolt on. Id hold off on the collet set for now

Thanks Joe, the drill press I have is a TOOL SHOP 8 inch bench top drill press, I think the model No. is 240-2003 (BOUGHT FROM MENARDS), IF THE SMALL END CUTTERS 1/16 or 1/8 slip on the chuck can always use my table on the DREMELL WORK STATION, as an aside have you gotten the LUTHERS BEST FRIEND yet, AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP Don

No tapered Spindle on that unit Brother. The small end mills will usually have a 1/4" shank so shouldn't be an issue fitting into a drill press chuck. The small bits used on Dremels I believe are 1/8" shank and some of the aftermarket bits can vary from that size. There are many small drill bits that we use I have several sets size 60-80 those are usually used in hand drills like this one https://www.amazon.com/CML-Supply-M...d=1548446548&sr=8-9&keywords=tiny+drill+chuck but I chuck them up in a cordless dremel I have dedicated for that purpose only. I have this Chuck on it so I never need to use those tiny collets even if I use a standard dremel bit they all fit into this chuck and hold very well. https://www.amazon.com/Dremel-4486-...8&qid=1548446427&sr=8-3&keywords=dremel+chuck

Haven't bought the Luthiers Friend yet been setting up the new shop. I want to paint the room but its to cold to open windows to get the paint smell out so painting will have to wait till summer

Thanks Joe, I have quite a few of the hand drills that I use, have been looking for the chuck you show I have one in a Dremell but I need another one the ones sold at Micr-Mart are more expensive then what you showed and I will order it as an aside I have a lot of Dremells maybe 10 or 12 mostly 395s have 2 of the cordeless ones 8220 what I do is every once in a while I go on ebay look at rotary tools, and I can find some good buys $10.00 to $15.00, and I buy them they are used but very adaquit, that way if one ever burns out or stops, working I do not worry about it, just toss it out, works quite well for me. THANKS AGAIN JOE you are Terrific, did you ever get the lutherers best friend, could use some help there, just me being me. THANKS Don

I haven't bought the Luthiers friend yet. Getting My new room set up and setting up the den for the wife to sew in has extra money tied up for getting those done first. I buy carbide cutters for the dremel. I use that dremel for work and carving metals. I also use it to clean up and bevel metals I weld together where a hand grinder cant access. I used to port intake and exhaust ports for RC nitro engines then polish them up for better performance on the engines. Nitro fuel is nasty stuff and was starting my make my throat sore and terrible migraine headaches so I no longer run anything using that fuel. I have converted everything to electric.

You are SOMETHING ELSE JOE, unbelievable, when do you sleep, I thought I had a lot going on until I read your threads just UNBELIVABLE question just put together my NEW DREMELL WORK STATION, on one of your posts you said you use the Dremell 8220 to do some small milling work, I have 2- 8220s, but have found the CHARGE does not last long, and I always have a spare in the charger, do you find that to be a problem when you are milling, I like the idea of being able to move it around, but i have other Dremells also and where do you buy your carbide bits etc. THANKS Don

Hey Brother I am an on the go person always busy. I unfortunately don't get much sleep and that's been my life for over 30 years. I go to sleep at midnight and get up at 4am everyday. My metabolism is high so even when I'm dog tired a few hours sleep rejuvenates me and I keep going. My Doctor gives me grief because sleep is a requirement for a healthy life. I just cant sleep more then 4-5 hours even with sleeping meds which I require to fall asleep. I thought as I aged ad sleep better but that hasn't been the case so far. Amazingly though after 4 hours sleep I am raring to go ready for a full day of being busy.

I have 4 total batteries for my cordless dremel, I rarely run out of juice before completing a job. I have replaced my batteries every year to make sure I have top performance and I condition them properly for a good long life.. when you receive a new battery you should fully charge it then discharge it before recharge. I do this several times when I first get a new battery. Then its a good idea to never charge the battery until is fully discharged or very close. The biggest headache with them is the loss of RPM as the Battery depletes. I am using a model that still uses NiMh batteries the downside of those is as they deplete so does voltage. I haven't looked for an upgraded Lithium powered one but the lithium would be better for what I use it for. Lithium batteries hold the power up through the batteries cycle and then drop off all at once so sustaining RPMs would be much easier. The issue with lithium is they give no warning when they are depleting so if your in the middle of a job and they die your done till you recharge. they are also not the safest chemistry as they can burst into flames that are difficult to put out. They are also easy to damage by over discharge. I use the cordless mostly because I don't always have a power outlet near my work.

I have used many cutters over the years, but I now buy these they hold up well for what I do, are inexpensive and have a host of profiles

I too get about 5hrs of sleep sometimes get to bed 3 to 4AM while working on a project, but then I sleep a lot on my recliner chair, that is one aspect of retirement maybe not healthy but it is what it is I try to let my body dictate what it wants to do that I will not fight, on the model(model No. 8220 Dremell) on my models which are not new it has 3 green lights when it gets to one have to change batteries and recharge the one, where do you get your new batteries from. THANKS AGAIN Don

Mine is pretty old no lights on it I get the batteries from amazon this is the one similar to what I have except mine is pretty old transparent Blue color. was one of the first cordless dremels to hit the market. mine is model 754 I bought it mostly for drilling holes with micro bits for ship rigging since its cordless its easier to use for that. https://www.amazon.com/Dremel-7300-...id=1548631043&sr=8-3&keywords=4.8+volt+dremel

Joe, I have one of those it is the mini dremell, mine is the big Dremell model No.8220, I use it for many items but it does not hold a charge for long, good tool I got 2 of them and 4 batteries with 2 chargers paid like $40.00 per unit on EBAY. Don
