    Clipper Ship Build Thoughts

Winova, Thermopylae is my favorite of the Clippers followed by Flying Cloud and Sea Witch. Robs Stag Hound is a great model as well! However, the warships are my favorites. Bill

    Hello from Burgenland in Austria

I can sympathise with the sentiment that once you discover that your build to date has inaccuracies you lose interest. I had a Thermopylae like that. Then the hull and masts moved house several times, a cat head got lost, and figurative rot set in until it went to the breakers. Nowadays...

Movie on the last tall ships

After watching videos like these, I always sit down with my model—I currently have a Preussen, a five-masted barque, on the slipway, and I'm trying to capture that power and grace in 1:96 scale. Has anyone else been inspired by these old films for a new project?

    Identify this Ship?

I obtained a photo of the Thermopylae that I built a few years ago and it is identical to the ship in your photo. Hope this will satisfy all , Beast regards Winova

    Identify this Ship?

I built the Thermopylae several years ago and the model shown looks just like my model, therefore I agree with others that it is most likely the Thermopylae. Cheers Winova

    Identify this Ship?

I believe that it’s supposed to be Thermopylae. Photo below for comparison

    Identify this Ship?

I agree with Brian. More likely it’s a 19th-century clipper or merchant barque model, possibly based on a vessel like the Thermopylae, Cutty Sark, or a fictional clipper-style ship built for display.

    Shroud rigging

...solution. - Incidentally, I've never quite forgiven Steel for giving me incorrect information about the standing rigging for my 'Thermopylae' back in 1974. In his defence though, I didn't know better. But I was never happy with that model, despite my errors being invisible. I knew it...

    Getting Started in The UK

...which a couple of YouTube bloggers were recommending. My last ship was probably the Airfix Great Western in the 1970s. I have a Sergal Thermopylae that I bought at least 20 years ago in the back of a cupboard but never started. I found some of the rigging I was looking for, thanks to this...

Build Log: Mantua Thermopylae 1:124 Scale

...kit by Mantua. From what I've In other words, the Mantua is the , it is a very nice kit that builds into a reasonable model of the Thermopylae. The only other kit that builds into a reasonable model of this ship is the old Scientific solid hull model that is long out of production. The old...

    Introduction from Nova Scotia…

...the look of the original schooner on the starboard side. A little deeper into my history starts with a Revell kit of the clipper ship Thermopylae when I was 16, 60 years ago. I still have that model. Skip to the last 7 years… A friend at the Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax asked a...

I have the kit and was trying to find the scale of the model. Guessing 1:96? Also, is the rigging line accurate?

"Flying Cloud " by Mamoli - kit bash

I've cannibalized dozens of Revell models....from CS, Thermopylae, to Constitution. Old Marx kits of Swordfish to Seawitch, Old broken Model shipways kits to just unrepairable kits , both wood and plastic. I'll buy or be gifted peoples junk, just to scavenge parts and fixtures from them...

"Flying Cloud " by Mamoli - kit bash

...of these shows, I hope you'll share some with us. This may sound like sacrilege on a wooden ship model but here goes. Revell makes highly accurate ship's boats for their 1:96th scale Cutty Sark or  Thermopylae models. Painted with the right semi-gloss paints, they'd provide decent replacements.

Hi new on the block. I'am a beginner little experience. I have the Scientific Models Constitution kit# 300, and the Thermopylae kit 182. Any comments?

Welcome! The Scientific kit of Thermopylae is a nice kit that is easily detailed. I was in rehab following surgery earlier this year and there was a completed that was on display in the lounge that was superbly built. The Scientific kit of the Constitution is a little more basic. There is no...
