Bomb Vessel Granado Cross Section, Scale 1:72, POF Kit by Miniature Arts

Hi Paul, the sheer rail is solid black wood. But it would be no problem with the brass pins too if it would be inked wood. I just put a drop of my blackening solution on the pin and it is black in seconds then I simply carefully wipe off the rest. Another way is to blacken the pin before it is...

    Le Fleuron 1729 - 64 Gun Ship PoB Scratch Build in 1:48 - (Ancre Monograph-J. Boudriot/G. Delacroix)

Hello Mates! When I last posted, I needed to reduce my beakhead aft to fore and keel to top of the beakhead. Tobias shared a proven method using his mill, to perform the same job with a rudder. I decided to use the same approach. To the head shaking of some machinists somewhere, I have...

    The "Chinese" Harvey

Still working on the planking... I can only complete one on each side on weekdays. But I hope to (finally) wrap it up this weekend. Meanwhile I've been trying out how to blacken the replacement brass cannon. I've been working with this: The results were mixed at first. The bottom cannon...

LE ROCHEFORT - Harbour yacht from 1787 1:36 by Tobias (Monograph by ANCRE)

Hello Jim, thank you very much my friend. To your question, no the Clou does not blacken, what you saw was the reflection of the LED lamp. For blackening brass I use the product Nerofor from Ballistol, it has the advantage of not bleeding into the wood.

Hayling Hoy: POF kit [COMPLETED BUILD]

Another stylistic fork in the road. I used brass for bolts on the planking with the intent of blackening them. I tried with Brass Black but it stained the wood. I was trying another product for some free standing brass and it looked really good. So I made some test brass bolts in a cherry scrap...

Hayling Hoy: POF kit [COMPLETED BUILD]

Waiting for the wale has been an opportunity to do a few of the kits within the kits. I followed through on upgrading the pumps. I used the pump handles from the kit that weren't conducive to hooking the pushrod to, I had to just contact them to the end, but otherwise I think these will add a...

Charles Royal Yacht, 1674, Scale 1:64, by Woody Joe (Japan)

Good morning Jim. Thank you for this lesson in cannon making. Brilliant and shows guys like me that even the tiniest details can be pulled off perfectly. Maybe one day when I have patience and skills my cannon will sort of resemble this. Cheers Grant

Greetings fellow modelers. First, I'd like to express gratitude to all who show an interest in the build log, and your comments and reactions made. Just to recall what we left off in our last session as part of the metalwork. We prepare the barrel by soldering the trunion and milling the touch...

From here on, I am on to the "easy" part of the build, where I am adding details and not structural elements. Anything I do from here can be rectified if I make a mistake. In a sense, this is much more relaxing than having to measure and triple measure parts which have not been created yet or...

    Hardening copper

Brass soldering with a soldering iron could be a pain, but... it is all about the proper heat temperature for the given job, and the super-clean surface. Also, there shouldn't be any gaps between parts (even the smallest). Yes, you can solder the steel (not stainless) with silver solder...

The Schooner Bluenose 1921, POF Yuanqing Models 1:72 [COMPLETED BUILD]

I understand that you are also looking again and again at the plans and old photos and discovering new items. :) Nice new additions to the top of the lower main mast. The four futtock shrouds now show indeed a bit to ‘brassy’. It’s up to the captain how to paint them: in a bit of contrast of in...

The Schooner Bluenose 1921, POF Yuanqing Models 1:72 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good afternoon, I made some changes to the Mainsail Throat Halyard and trestle tree assembly. In keeping with the BN 2 build which is supposed to closely follow the original, I changed the Throat Halyard Hanger by removing the loop shone in YQ,s drawings and just made it straight. I added a...

    Endurance by OcCre 1:70

Also didn't like the brass doors so I'm making my own wooden ones. Here are the pics of the dog kennels... Also, I want to represent the last fateful days of the Endurance, so I'm trying to weather everything. I'm going to blacken all the brass provided by the kit. I have a couple of books...

It will do both. A quick dip and wipe of will clean but I use it for weathering/oxidizing brass. Have a read of this it might help. https://inmyownstyle.com/how-to-age-brass-in-less-than-5-minutes.html Make sure you run test pieces(I use old brass hinges etc) before deciding on the final desired...
