Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Grant, don't fuss a moment about the brass! ROTF I decided from the word go to keep all my brass, brass-colored without blackening anything. Heck, I did not even blacken the cannon barrels and I much prefer that look.

Jax makes JAX Pewter Black that works on most solder, as well as brass and several other metals.

Santa Maria 1:65 based on Amati kit

For some reason, crafting the rudders always presents me with certain difficulties. This time, I was hoping everything would go smoothly. The Amati's rudder pintles and gudgeons seemed to be the only parts I wanted to use from the entire kit :). These details are quite accurate. However, upon...

    NIKONOV sub build [COMPLETED BUILD]

Thank you for your kind comments. I appreciate that purists would blacken the bronze, but I sort of like it shiny. So does the wife -and she's the boss! Anyway, factory finish is good! It must have been new once.

    NIKONOV sub build [COMPLETED BUILD]

My Congratulations for finishing this interesting model - very well done  This kit model I like (personal taste) more than the Master Korabel version Comparing with photos of the "original" - better the replica in St.Petersburg it is coming closer...

    The Mary Rose

The rudder. First thing was to blacken all brass parts - the rudder fittings, and while I was at it the gun port fittings and the parral bead brackets. For this I use a jar of ammonia to which is added two heaped spoons of copper carbonate - The actual rudder was built from two oak timbers...

Armed Pinnace 1:16 by Panart built by me in 2003

Same goes for etched brass parts…need a way to “weather” etched brass but not blacken necessarily…more like making it look like gold accent…but not paint…hmmm…I guess it is the same dilemma for shiny brass…perhaps the gun bluing chemicals are as close as we get…not blackening as such but a nice...

Armed Pinnace 1:16 by Panart built by me in 2003

Your build looks good! Very clean and carefully built. I have made two Panart Armed-Launches and to this day it is one of my favourite kits. I really like the detail you can put into a 1:16 scale model, and the subject is just so full of interesting features. I used a gun-bluing chemical...

Armed Pinnace 1:16 by Panart built by me in 2003

I am learning from the great SoS members here how to blacken brass with simple to buy chemicals and the process leaves them a lot less shiny. Might do a search on brass blackening to see what comments come up.

HMS Vanguard 1787 1:72 a Victory Models kit

Hi Andre, thanks for your suggestion from Model Monkey. I had not been aware of them, but they do look nice. The total price to use them to replace the kits 18 and 9 pounders would be quite expensive and shipping to Australia even more eye watering. I think I will continue with the Caldercraft...

HMS Vanguard 1787 1:72 a Victory Models kit

Hi Chestcutter, I see what you mean by the gun metal grey on the brass cannons. I do like the the black on the kit's guns. I don't know enough about using a chemical blacking method to blacken the cannons. Do you need to remove the oxide and/or can you seal the finish with a matte varnish to...

HMS Vanguard 1787 1:72 a Victory Models kit

Hi Andre. To be clear the blackened barrels in the photo in post #78 are from the kit. The brass ones are purchased here, from CMB. They are the Caldercraft cannon kits, they have 2 per pack for £8.76 UK I did blacken the brass ones and the kit ones using the chemical techniques using Birchwood...

    Endurance from Occre by Mallacoota

Just saw it. I love it! Looks great. There are a few things I wanted to do to add detail to my Endurance above and beyond what OcCre supplied. I'm going to buy better rope, blocks, add planks to some of the structures like the dog houses, and definitely blacken all the brass. I'm going to furl...

Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Grant - YES indeed :D I made a small notation in one of the images. Thought that it would better visually (historically incorrect) highlight those extra details. And having spent too much time with other details including the stern etc.. will leave these iron bits in brass hahaha. I will...

Cazador Xebec 1750 - OcCre - scale 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning Peter. Stunning work and wonderfully shown in your log. I have been debating wether I want curved or straight yards so I’m excited to see how they look. Your rope work is superb. Some of the best bindings I have seen. Cheers Grant. PS the Admiral always knows- next time she uses her...

Cazador Xebec 1750 - OcCre - scale 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Construction of the yards. Hi guys, This weekend I started to construct the yards. 3 to be exact. Each yard consist out of two parts tapered to the end. When bound together a strong but flexible yard is the result so it won't break in the wind. This is what I want to simulate, so I want to...

LE ROCHEFORT - Harbour yacht from 1787 1:36 by Tobias (Monograph by ANCRE)

So you use the Ballistol to blacken the brass bolts after inserting them into the wood and the Birchwood Casey if you have single parts which needs to be blackened. Thank you very much :)

LE ROCHEFORT - Harbour yacht from 1787 1:36 by Tobias (Monograph by ANCRE)

Hi Dieter, I use Ballistol to blacken the wood, everything else is treated with black brass. Ballistol doesn't bleed into the wood and after treatment I dab it off with a damp cloth.
