A most enjoyable read, brought to life by the first-hand accounts of Saumarez. Screen shots courtesy of Amazon -

    The Devil's Mariner

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very interesting insights into daily life of board, the risks, danger and nebulous nature of early navigation in ships which really should have been in the breakers yard. Screen shots courtesy of Amazon -

    Cutting a log

Not so much research as a picture which popped up in my feed. I am sure there would be many variations depending on what they wanted.

    The Monster Book Of Monsters

Admins - I could not determine where to put this post. If appropriate, please feel free to move it. I saw this little chap as a film prop at Harry Potter World, so thought I would make one for a Christmas gift. I started in early November and am glad I did, because it took a while longer...

    Rotary Tool Carving

A video recently came up in my feed, so I thought I would take a break from the ship and give it a go. Whilst I have a couple of sets of grinders I needed a burr to seriously shift some material so I got this - Then off to the log pile for a piece of oak - I roughed out the shape of a...

Which Admiralty style kit to buy?

I am a few months away from completing my build of the Mary Rose, but my mind turns to what my next build will be. I want to build an Admiralty style model, you know the type - POF, part planked, exposed interior, good detail. I have had a look at the available kits and builds on this site...

    Which sail cloth to buy?

I would appreciate your views on which sail cloth is, in your experience, the best to work with by way of weathering, stitching/edging and overall appearance - and why. Thanks.

    RNLI Lifeboat

While doing some work with the Hull Maritime Museum (England) I had the opportunity to look at a lifeboat model which dates from the late 1800s and is a Royal National Lifeboat Institute boat. It was usual to present a generous benefactor with such a model. As you can see, she needs some TLC...

Attaching a sail to a spar

I might put sails on my build, not sure yet, and that is a way off. But my brain is ticking and my question - is the sail attached to the spar by individual loops, or is it a running loop stitch (like you see on spiral binding for books)? Cheers.

    Star Wars Trooper

A quick diversion from the Mary Rose. I picked up a Star Wars Trooper for my lad, but it was just too bright and shiny. I did some weathering with pastel chalks and he is now what the officionados call a Sand Trooper. Please to say that he loves it! Before - After -

To any members in the North East of England:

Sunderland Maritime Heritage will be showing their 10th scale model of HMS Venerable (Battle of Camperdown, 1797) and some other (smaller!) models at Sunderland History Fair on 21st May 2022. The Venerable is very much a 'work in progress' (see photo) - but she is still an impressive sight...

Keepin CA glue in the fridge?

I read that if CA glue is kept in the fridge (opened or not) it lasts a lot longer. Does anyone have any experience of doing this and does it work? Cheers.

BOOK REVIEW - Trafalgar: the men, the battle, the storm

I picked this up for Kindle at £1.50. It basically splits into the three elements of the title. What I liked about it was the insights into the people involved, not just the famous names but also the ordinary seamen and marines on both sides - where they were from, their roles and in some...

    Interesting TV Programme

Just watched an interesting programme on PBS entitled The Mysteries of a Mediaeval Ship about a ship found in the mud at Newport, Wales, UK. She was built in the 15th century and it is a good detective story around where she was built, her structure and who owned her during the turbulent period...

    Grinling Gibbons - Master Carver

Just seen a programme made by the BBC (UK TV channel) called Carved With Love: The Genius of British Woodwork: The Glorious Grinling Gibbons. Gibbons (4 April 1648 – 3 August 1721) was a master wood carver who achieved royal sponsorship (Charles II) and arguably produced some of the most...

    Good TV Programme

I have just finished watching the documentary 'Britain's Biggest Warship' which is about the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. The programme is not about the building of the ship but the crewing up, sea trials and subsequent commissioning. It is in three parts, made by the BBC (a UK...

    Mediaeval and Tudor Ship Voyages

I found this interactive database which contains the details of English, Welsh, and Channel Islands merchant ships, and the voyages they undertook, between 1400 and 1580. Worth a look if you have a few minutes to spare - http://medievalandtudorships.org/
