    Noob Question

Extremely comprehensive, but I must say, that it would have put me off model shipbuilding forever if I had been confronted by all that when I started!:( Bob

    Noob Question

I don't know. There are too many unknowns, such as have you built anything before? What type of ship do you want to build? Have you any tools at all. Are you happy to risk hundreds of dollars on somthing that may not work out? I am completely blinkered in this sort of thing, but I...

    Noob Question

Just to recap - this was the initial question: How much did you spend on your first ship, mail order or local, how long was your first build, see a lot of ships on ebay from China, thoughts on Chinese quality, differences between $100 ship and $500 ship, is it quality or number of parts, any...

    Noob Question

I guess I am completely out of date, and too blinkered in my own field - ! :D Bob

    Noob Question

There is very little scratchbuilding going on these days, so it is probably best to get a kit. But I would not go for one costing hundreds of dollars, because if you find you can't do it, you have wasted a lot of money, as it is very hard to sell half-built kits. If you buy tools, and find...

    Noob Question

With scratchbuilding, you find your own plans and materials from various sources, usually for a small finacial layout. Then, you build it yourself. A kit is usually quite an expensive item where you get all the plans parts in a box and assemble them, following instructions with a minimum...

    Noob Question

I built this using the above tools. Just sawed the frames out of standard plywood, and planked it with 1/16th-inch obeche sheet, sliced up with scalpel and steel ruler. Not a kit. Just got the plans from a book. Bob -.

    Noob Question

Once purchased, the tools can be used over and over again to build hundreds of models! Lots of model shipbuilders like to take a lots of time, so I don't see any problem with scratchbuilding. My first serious model was brigantine Leon, and I built it with reference to the two books Plank of...

    900-Ton Barque Completed

Hi Donnie, I knew the model was still there, and just the thin slice of balsa wood image had gone. Just wondered why, as the model was complete and the balsa wood was just showing a piece of it long before it was finished. It doesn't matter all that much. :) Bob

    Toolbox

It is hardly ever as tidy as this. I also lose things, or they seem to disappear, and then come back again when I am looking for something else. But I don't lend anything at all these days! Bob

    Toolbox

My tool box Not really a massive selection, and a lot of it second hand, picked up on car boot sales etc. It is not all used for model shipbuilding, because I make lots of other things as well. Neither is it always this tidy, and it took me about two hours to sort it all out this morning! Bob

    Drawing

Today, Friday 22nd May, 2020 - I made a wooden box to keep my drawing pens, pencils, markers, ruler, brushes etc in. Once again, as with most of the things I do, almost totally obsolete, as most drawing seems to be done using CAD these days, that fortunately is well beyond my capabilities...

    900-ton wooden barque

Thursday, 21st May 2020 I have now completed the display case for the 900-ton barque. Like the model, this type of case is not very popular amongst model shipbuilders, as general opinion is that a plainer case does not distract from the model like a wooden bordered one such as this, but I...

    900-ton wooden barque

My new lot of glue arrived today, and the local model shop announced they are closing down. It was convenient to go in for certain materials, even if they were more expensive than online - but it looks like online all the time from now on! I guess model shipbuilding in the UK is just...

I know, not that it matters, but it doesn't alter the fact that it is indeed finished!:)

    900-Ton Barque Completed

Monday, 18th May, 2020 900-ton barque Today, I fitted the twisted wire edging around the inner base, and put the model on it for a trial view. Everything is looking OK, and the polished base really enhances the model. As it is a fictitious ship, built to the normal specifications of the...

    900-ton wooden barque

Very nice - :) - I certainly wouldn't have the patience for a 5-year project - I think more in terms of weeks, and even then, I am getting pretty fed up with it at the end!:D Bob
