I forgot you were going to paint it. I get carried away with dark wood like mahogany or walnut and I just have to stain it or put clear over it. Love that shinny wood.

Hi Uwik and thanks for your comment. I have noticed that a lot of ship models here and online in general use plywood for the ribs or the bulkheads. I don't see why that wouldn't be ok for this model too. The frames are a little bigger than the prototype would have been but that will make for a...

Looking at the pictures above I see that the narrow parts are close to the ends of the planks. Can you cut that narrow part off and just use the good parts? Is there enough lumber with the kit to do that? The planking looks really nice except for the tiny thin slits in the mahogany. Gonna be a...

I forgot to mention that I went back to the plywood because there just wasn't anything available around here for solid wood. However I did find a slightly thinner plywood at HD that was the same price as the cabinet grade plywood but was lighter and had far fewer cavities in it and much smaller...

My frames are narrow at the top for the plank sheer. The assembly above that will be added separately All these new frames have a notch at the bottom center that fits over the top keel piece. That will bring the outside planking down to the keel at a lower elevation to hide some of the...

Are the planks not straight on the long edge? That is a problem. Have you tried to sand the edges lightly to at least reduce the uneveness? That's a serious problem there I would think.

Hi Paul and thanks for jumping in here. I thought of doing the frames with regular lumber but at 3/4 inch thick they would be pretty heavy. Looks like you used pine there but not sure. The poplar would be great if I could get it in 1/2" but so far that doesn't seem possible. I'm really thinking...

I think you are right. Looking at it again I see the stern where I thought the bow was. Oh well.

In the first picture of the boat in post #2 it shows the booms facing aft. The next picture of the boat under sail it shows the boom facing foreward. Is that an optical illusion or which way is right? Booms usually face aft except for a jib sail outrigger. Interesting arrangement. Norgale.

Wood it's characteristics and use in model building

I think this wood is all kiln dried, at least the specialty woods are. Some of the fresh PT stuff wouldn't be though. I'll let it set for awhile and see what it does. Thanks again Pete. Don't know if you can see this but it's more a brownish color than green but more green in the pic.. Nice...

    Another Shipwreck washed up.

Interesting observations here. I agree that docks would not have been built that heavy back then. With the floors so close together and the planks so heavy sure looks like a boat part to me. Funny thing is I don't see any propeller or shaft to make it go.

The board I bought is a bit greenish so maybe I should let it dry out some before I start cutting. How long does this take? Will it twist in the sun?

Thanks for that Peter. I haven't checked True Value but I will. The frames will not be stained or colored at all. They are pretty much hidden so why bother. I just hope they will be strong enough for the duration.

You are sure right about that but after I'm gone it won't matter to me anyway. Ha! Found some more problems tonight. A few of my templates have wrong center lines on them. They fold in half ok but the center line was off. Correcting all of them now. Redesigning the frames too. Making them...

Wood it's characteristics and use in model building

I'm glad you said that Dave. I just went to HD and got a piece of poplar 1" x 12" X 6' and it was $60. The stuff ain't cheap but it's a beautiful piece of wood with no knots and tight grain and s4s to boot. I'm going to squeeze every frame out of it that I can and then see what's left to do...

Wood it's characteristics and use in model building

Thanks for the reply Dave. I used plywood first and got pretty much all of the frames set. They didn't line up well at all and I removed them all but ruined the whole thing trying to get it apart. So I'm starting over and wondered if there was a better wood that is common at Home Depot or such...

    Another Shipwreck washed up.

I'd say that was a piece of the bottom of a ship. What we are seeing is the piece up side down with a chunk of the keel still in place.
