    Thickness sander

The Jim Byrnes fits my bill to a "T", I have been a scratch builder for years and the addition of the Byrnes saw and thickness sander made things much more available for me. No longer do I have to await orders for premade woods, I can make my own planks made to measure. My band saw reduces the...

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

Thank you Jim. This past few months have been difficult my wife has been sick, fell and broke a vertebra in her back a while ago so everything falls to me, coupled with a lack of or no inspiration or motivation, so haven't posted for some time, though I check in and observe regularly. Bob

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

Stern work is complete, I am very happy with the results. Made the gun port lids and installed them as well as the rudder. Carved the 32' ships launch and installed it. Carved two ships anchors, best bowers. Am currently working on making the gun carriages, 26 x 8 pounders, 6 x 4 pounders...

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

I continue work on the ships quarter galleries, the port side one is almost complete. The scroll work is difficult, holding on the the small parts while you carve them is the hardest part, the Pear wood carves beautifully and holds detail so well, it is a pleasure to carve. Bob

Have the starboard quarter gallery almost finished, have to do the stern piece yet, but I must say, I am very happy with the carved work on this one. Will begin the port side and finish them both together. Bob

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

That is great information, now I can replace Le Renommee's figurehead with the proper one. Timing is everything, wish I had this information a couple of months ago, but better late than never. I had been wondering about the figurehead, but I didn't think the French would just use a beaver by...

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

Work continues on the quarter galleries, bit by bit they are coming along. Pear is such a nice wood to carve and I thank goodness for my Foredom Micro Motor for being able to get the really fine stuff carved. Still a long way to go, but I'm getting there. Bob

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

Work continues on the frigate, I began constructing the carved decorative stern work, and I am quite happy with the results so far. Small steps and some of the parts are very difficult to hold while carving, but I am managing. Early stages yet, so much to do.

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

It has been a while since I last posted, but progress is steady, a great way to pass the winter and this Covid 19 thing. I spent the past few days working on the bow assembly and associated carvings, it is coming together well, not quite finished but I thought I would share my progress. I...

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

I am making slow but sure progress on the model, plenty of other carving jobs have crept up in the mean time, so my time is divided between them. Let me see: ladders from main deck to the walkways between quarterdeck and forecastle in Pear wood, forecastle breast rail in Boxwood, Ebony and Pear...

French 8 pounder frigate La Castor, from Le Renommee draught by Jean Boudriot, Combination method, Bread and butter and plank on rib.

Yes, I am using brass nails all over, snipping off the heads to keep more to scale. Thank you for the kind words, I'm having fun, she's a sweet looking ship. Bob

Help with bending walnut strips 7x3mm

The end caps are perforated so pressure can't build up and explode, and no, I don't soak the wood first, I let the steam do the work. I do keep a close eye on water levels so the pot doesn't run dry. It is a trial and error process to see how long certain woods and thicknesses take to become...

Help with bending walnut strips 7x3mm

I use a steam box that I built myself with ordinary supplies available at any hardware store. A single burner hot plate, a steam kettle, and some PVC pipe and fittings. Steam is a reliable way of bending wood, just about any wood, I have even bent Ebony. Picture of the set up is attached. Give...
