Just starting a group build through my IPMS group. The requirement is for each of us to choose and complete a 1/700 scale ship by mid-March. I chose the Nelson due to its unique design. I plan to enhance the kit with an Artwox wooden deck, anchor chain, WEM PE set and scratch building. I have also found PE crew to place around the ship. I’m expecting it to arrive shortly.
I’m going for an action diorama during Operation Neptune, when she relieved her sister ship, Rodney during the Normandy Invasion. This will be my first try at dazzle camouflage not to mention working in 1:700 scale and using photoetch. I may go blind, bezerk or both! image.jpg

Best of luck on a very ambitious undertaking. I recently read an interesting comment for builders of 1/700 so it may be of interest to you. How much of the rigging is visible unless you are pretty close to it. Keeping 700 rigging to scale is a real challenge. I wonder if this wouldn't apply to crew member figures too.
Enjoy!

I have some thin 0.047mm rigging line from Modelkasten that I may use. Finer than human hair. Not sure if it’s flexible or not. It is in a light steel gray color. It may not present well. If so, I also have some thicker threads, used for tying fly fishing lures, in multiple colors. Those are the lines I’m going to use when I finish and rig my1/400 Titanic, which I have benched until there’s more time to complete it.
I have just received a book from Shipcraft called ‘Rodney and Nelson’. Hopefully I will glean some useful information from it to better detail
This kit as, although nicely detailed, it could use a little more, especially on the suprerstructure
I am toying with ways to accurately scribe hull plating also. Not sure how to go about it as yet.

How is your Nelson project going?

Thank you Uwek. I have been putting the final touches on the kit. Although sparse, here are some pictures of my build. I need to come up with a way to more accurately photo-document my builds. There’s quite a few bit of scratch build. Particularly in the masts and ventilation systems. The rigging was done with easy line and some fly-tying threads. Made all of the flags myself. By no means is this my best work. I’ve never worked in this scale before.

Are you working on another project?

Uwek,
Thank you. I have not started any new ship projects as yet. I still have a 1/400 Titanic project in its “dry dock” awaiting completion. I am currently working on armor projects for my IPMS group. I have a USS North Carolina and RHS Georgiios Averof on the shelf for future ship builds.
