I have an old Amati "Stad Von Bremen" kit I am building.

I am now wondering how I should approach the inner bulwark planking, the outer planking is 1.5 x 6 and the inner 1 x 3. As can be seen in the photos below the bulkheads are protruding through the deck and supported the planking while building, what I am wondering is how thick the bulwark should be, should I be cutting off the tops of the frames before fitting the inner bulwark planking or should I leave them in place and plank over them (perhaps with a little thinning of the frames).

Hi Dylan,

The stad von bremen is a statenjacht.

The best example of a statenjacht is de Utrecht.
There is a detailed book about this ship written by Ab Hoving. You can buy the English version at Seawatch books.
This is a great reference for your build.

In the bullwark the top of the frame members are situated with planking on the outside of the hull and also on the inside for warships and this was also the case for a statenjacht.

In the picture below you can see the thickness of the bullwark which is about 20-25 cm.

Thanks Maarten,

20 - 25 cm seems to match up with the size of the caprail suggested in the kit (1.5 x 5mm). With that it looks like my best bet is to cut off the frames then glue some 2mm spacers in place before applying the inner planking.

The photos on the seawatchbooks.com link have given me some ideas though I am endeavoring to steer clear of purchasing any additional materials (reference or building) for this build. I am not sure how successful I will be in this respect as many of the supplied parts do not seem to match in scale.
