1702 - The Action of August 1702
was a naval battle that took place from 19–25 August 1702 O.S. between an English squadron under Vice-Admiral John Benbow and a French under Admiral Jean du Casse, off Cape Santa Marta on the coast of present-day Colombia, South America, during the War of the Spanish Succession. Benbow vigorously attacked the French squadron, but the refusal of most of his captains to support the action allowed du Casse to escape. Benbow lost a leg during the engagement and died of illness about two months later. Two of the captains were convicted of cowardice and shot.

1782 HMS Royal George (1756 - 100) while heeled at Spithead off Portsmouth to repair the coppering with the lower deck guns run out, was struck by a sudden and violent squall which threw her over so much that water rushed in the open ports. She filled and sank killing Rear-Admiral Richard Kempenfelt and about 900 crew.

lines & profile NMM, Progress Book, volume 5, folio 298, states that 'Chiffonne' arrived at Woolwich Dockyard on 3 March 1803 and was docked on 8 April to be recoppered. She was undocked on 23 May 1803, and sailed on 17 June 1808 having been fitted. NMM, Progress Book, volume 6, folio 373, states that 'Chiffonne' went to Sheerness Dockyard in 1804 for defects to be sorted, and then in 1808 and 1811 to Portsmouth Dockyard for repairs.

1986 – The Soviet passenger liner SS Admiral Nakhimov sinks in the Black Sea after colliding with the bulk carrier Pyotr Vasev, killing 423.

1939 Battle of the Danzig Bay
The Battle of Danzig Bay (Polish: bitwa w Zatoce Gdańskiej) took place on 1 September 1939, at the beginning of the invasion of Poland, when Polish Navy warships were attacked by German Luftwaffe aircraft in Gdańsk Bay (then Danzig Bay). It was the first naval-air battle of World War II.
