Frederick,
I’m on only my third build, a schooner. It and all my previous builds have painted hulls. My next build will be a simple sailboat, the Herreshoff 12 1/2 that was generously given to me. It’s an old kit from Blue Jacket that has excellent wood and parts. I want to paint the bottom below the waterline to simulate bottom paint but stain the rest of the hull and cockpit.
I notice that in the first bunch of photos there were some dark splotches on some of the planks, I assume it’s the natural color variation in the wood.
I also notice that you apparently applied a little wood filler on the bottom of the hull.
How did you get such nice staining on the bottom of the hull? Did you sand very lightly and then apply the stain? I don’t see any “bad spots”, only a beautifully stained hull.
