1918 - HMS Glatton and her sister ship Gorgon were originally built as coastal defence ships for the Royal Norwegian Navy, as Bjørgvin and Nidaros respectively. She was requisitioned from Norway at the beginning of World War I, but was not completed until 1918 although she had been launched over three years earlier. On 16 September 1918, before she had even gone into action, she suffered a large fire in one of her 6-inch magazines, and had to be scuttled to prevent an explosion of her main magazines that would have devastated Dover. Her wreck was partially salvaged in 1926, and moved into a position in the northeastern end of the harbour where it would not obstruct traffic. It was subsequently buried by landfill underneath the current car ferry terminal.

1797 - HMS Pelican (1795 - 18), Lt. Thomas White (Act.), destroyed French privateer Trompeur (12) off St. Domingo
large.jpg
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan with stern board outline, sheer lines with scroll figurehead, and longitudinal half-breadth proposed for building Albatross (1795) and Dispatch (1795). The plan was later used for Pelican (1795), Kite (1795) and Raven (1796) before being altered in April 1795 and used for Star (1795), Swallow (1795 and Sylph (1795). Signed by John Henslow [Surveyor of the Navy, 1784-1806] and William Rule [Surveyor of the Navy, 1793-1813].

1803 – Launch of French Suffren, a 74 gun Short Variant (Suffren-group) of the Temeraire class
large (7).jpg
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of the ‘Algesiras’ (1804), a French 74-gun two-decker third-rate ship of the line. Built in ‘bread and butter’ fashion, the half model is mounted on a painted backboard on which is inscribed ‘Algesiras’. Built in 1804 this two-decker measured 181 feet along the gun deck by 48 feet in the beam. The ‘Algesiras’ was captured at the Battle of Trafalgar by the ‘Tonnant’ but recaptured the next day. In 1808, she was seized by Spanish insurgents at Cadiz and a year later was at Portsmouth, where the lines were taken off to produce a draught from which this model is based. This is confirmed by the solid bulwarks fitted to the quarter- and poop decks on the model, a feature that was introduced to all ships in the early 19th century. The ‘Algesiras’ was eventually broken up at Cadiz in 1826.

1810 - The Action of 18 September 1810
was a naval battle fought between British Royal Navy and French Navy frigates in the Indian Ocean during the Napoleonic Wars. The engagement was one of several between rival frigate squadrons contesting control of the French island base of Île de France, from which French frigates had raided British trade routes during the war. The action came in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Grand Port, in which four British frigates had been lost, and just four days after a fifth British frigate had been captured and subsequently recaptured in the Action of 13 September 1810. In consequence of the heavy losses the British force had suffered, reinforcements were hastily rushed to the area and became individual targets for the larger French squadron blockading the British base at Île Bourbon.

1758 – Launch of HMS Alarm, a 32 gun Niger-class frigate,
she was later the first ship in the Royal Navy to have a fully copper-sheathed hull

large (2).jpg
This print, published by Carington Bowles in 1781, is inscribed: 'His Mjesty's ship the Alarm, a fifth rate carrying 36 Guns, and 300 Men; Conducting a Spanish Prize into Gibralter [sic]'. 'Alarm' was part of the fleet under Vice Admiral George Darby, which managed to break through the Spanish blockade during the Siege of Gibraltar on 12 April, 1781, providing vital supplies to the 6,000 or so troops garrisoned on the island. This was the Second Relief of Gibraltar. The first, under Admiral George Rodney, reached Gibraltar in the spring of 1780, bringing reinforcements of 1,052 men to the existing 5,282 troops stationed on the island, as well as an abundance of supplies. 'Alarm' is shown port-side and fully rigged, but having sustained considerable damage to her sails from enemy fire. Two manned vessels, probably Xebecks, are pictured to her port-side and at her stern. Gibraltar appears on the horizon.

1715 – Re-Launch of HMS Royal George
large (1).jpg
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the body plan with sternboard outline, sheer lines, and longitudinal half-breadth for Royal George (1715), a 100-gun, First Rate, three-decker. The Royal George was rebuilt from the Queen (1693) at Chatham Dockyard, having her keel laid in May 1709 and being launched in September 1715. The plan gives the dimensions as 171ft 9in on the gun deck, 139ft 7in lenght of keel for tonnage, 49ft 3in extreme breadth, 19ft 6in depth in hold, and 1801 burthen tons. In 1735 she underwent a great repair, completed in 1737 before she was commissioned into service for the first time in 1741, when it joined Admiral Norris's Fleet. Because of this, it is possible that the ship looked quite different to this design. Notable alterations by this period included raising the height of the channels. In 1756 she was renamed the 'Royal Anne' upon the launched of a new 100-gun 'Royal George' that year.

1766 - Launch of HMS Magnificent, a 74-gun Ramillies-class third-rate ship of the line
large.jpg

Note the pencil annotations of chain channels and gunports. An annotation on the reverse states that the class was similar to the 'Superb' (1760), specifically mentioning 'Monarch', 'Magnificent', and Marlborough'.

"The loss of H.M.S. Conqueror 100 guns on Rum Cay, Bahamas, West Indies" [sic], attributed to George Pechell Mends
Signed lower left 'G.P.M' and inscribed along the bottom 'The loss of H.M.S. Conqueror 100 guns on Rum Cay, Bahamas, West Indies'. The 'Conqueror' was a 101-gun screw-assisted 1st-rate, of 3225 tons, built at Devonport in 1855. Under Captain Edward Sotheby she was carrying troops to assist French intervention in Mexico when wrecked on Rum Cay due to a navigational error, on 13 December 1861. All 1400 people on board got off safely. Mends would only just have arrived on the North American and West Indies station (as flag-captain of the 'Edgar') at the time of 'Conqueror's' loss, and the fact this drawing is dated two weeks after the wreck suggests he saw salvage work in progress that day, even though this is probably a composed drawing rather than an on-the-spot scketch. The remains of the ship are known and now designated as an underwater museum site, popular with divers.

1780 - HMS Pearl (32), Cptn George Montagu, took French frigate Esperance (28) off Bermuda.
The Action of 30 September 1780 was a minor naval engagement off the Bermudas, where HMS Pearl captured the L'Espérance, a French frigate of 32 guns launched in 1779.
large (1).jpg
Shortly after commissioning the British ship ‘Pearl’ Captain George Montagu was cruising off Fayal in the Azores when early in the morning he saw and chased a sail. After several hours he was able to open fire and a two hour fight ensued. The other ship eventually struck and it turned out to be the Spanish frigate ‘Santa Monica’. Though the Spanish ship was less strongly armed, Montagu’s crew was very raw since only ten of the men having been in a man-of-war before. In the painting, the ‘Pearl’ is in the centre foreground and is shown in the process of raking the ‘Santa Monica’ in the left of the picture. In the right distance are two more British frigates. The painting is signed ‘Tho. Whitcombe 1805’.

After a number of aborted attacks, the British succeeded in driving the Spanish back to their harbour after capturing the Conquistador and running the vice-admiral's ship Africa on shore where she was blown up by her own crew after being totally dismasted and made helpless. Both commanders were reprimanded by their respective commands for their conduct during the engagement.

1807 - The capture of the Jeune Richard
was the result of a naval engagement that took place in the Caribbean on 1 October 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars between the British packet ship Windsor Castle and the French privateer Jeune Richard. In an unequal battle, the Windsor Castle, under the command of her acting captain William Rogers, not only defended repeated attacks from the privateer, but finally engaged her, boarded her and after overpowering the much larger crew, forced them below decks and took the privateer as its prize. The victory was widely reported in contemporary papers and journals, and Rogers and his crew were hailed as heroes and lavishly rewarded for their valour.
