All I need now is the boat. Based on the plans for 42' Longboat Armed for War 1834 by A.N.C.R.E The next project...A beginning.

Keep in mind that those boats were originally designed in french inches, and thus will be a little longer than English measurements, in case you are seeing some scaling discrepancies.

Thanks Rob. No problem though, the plans are direct from ANCRE and Im building it size for size. No scaling differances in this case.

So what's a "French inch." First time I've ever heard of such a thing.
Prior to the late 1700's the French measured using what we call the French Inch, or pouse. It equates to 1.066" Imperial. So the kit I am currently working on is a 36' French Longboat from 1680-1780, thus in Imperial it would have been 38'4". Another thing to be careful of is that currently pouce translates to Imperial Inches instead of the old French ones. Anyway, any time you are using an ANCRE monograph, read the manual thoroughly to make sure whether the drawings were originally French or Imperial Inches.

Couldn't help myself and had to start with the fun bits. Made from 19mm brass bar stock. Blackend with Birchwood Brass Black and finished with Carnauba Wax.

1. NICE work!
2. You put me to shame.
3.. What scale, total length, max circumference and total weight of this little beauty?
4. I need to make 50 such items at 1/48 for a frigate. How many degrees is the taper of the
barrel?

1. Thanks Bill
2. It was my job in my youth (i have no intention to shame anyone) and after you do 50 you'll be a pro.
3. weight 132grams. Dimensions as per attachments As for angles I generally don't worry about them as the items are so small, I tend to machine down to my major diameter at on end and my minor diameter at the other. And then in increments measure dia along the length (randomly nothing precise) in between the major and minor dia. Eyeball the machining in between increments roughlly then using a smooth file flaten everything into the desired taper. trust that makes sence.
4. Wow...50. You'll be seeing them in your sleep by the time you finish. I have to make 4 small guns for the current model and typiclly rought them out. Last photo shows the 1 on the right roughly finished but not filed and emeryclothed. I use this to measure out the remainder.
