Is there a formula for sizing 17th century anchor hawsers.
Off course it depends on which type and weight the anchor was, which was also defined by the class or weight of the ship,
=> so about which ship you are looking for?

Jean Boudriot is writing this about his 74-gunner

btw: also interesting to know, that the strength of such a ropw was reduced by 50% already after 4 years - so they had to use oversized cables

I guess it is under "Divers" the line of "cables"
I have to check in my english copy of the La Renommee monograph in the evening
