I am working on a model of Hayling Hoy and want to show the anchor being hauled out by the windlass (and catheads). How do you attach the anchor cable to the windlass? It there a knot or is there supposed to be some sort of small peg coming out of the mortises for the hand spikes?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Hello,
I am half way through building the same model and have the same query. Also where is the anchor cable stored. Did you ever find out?

There is a smallish entrance to below deck. I put it on the windlass but that's wrong. You just need to get it coiled up in there. No small task but it should look awesome

You need what was called a messenger.
This was a loop of line that was tied to the anchor cable.
The messenger what wrapped around the windlass and upon winding the windlass the anchor cable would be brought aboard.
I have an image of that set up here somewhere.
I will post when I find it.

The Hayling Hoy did not have a capstan, but rather a windlass. I don't know how it was rigged but I do not see how it could be set up with a messenger and nippers. I am also interested to see how they rigged it.

Just did some searching and found the following drawing. There was no legend that I could find with part ID.

I think once the anchor was up, it would be secured in the normal way including the use of the catheads similar to the method shown in The Young Sea Officer's Sheet anchor 1819 by Darcy Lever which is below. The anchor cable was usually untied from the ring when at sea and stowed below deck.

I believe the same principle would apply.
They would perhaps have a snatch block secured aft to take the messenger?
Another possibility is they would raise up a certain length of anchor hawser.
Secure it.
Tie on nippers.
Pull that up.
Secure it.
Move nippers further down the anchor hawser.
And repeat.
