Attaching Staysail to Bowstay

I am planning to attach a Staysail to my scratch built model of the Mayflower Schallop. I have the sail and line running through the three sides of the sail. I plan to use brass rings for the hanks attaching the sail to the bowstay. Is this a good plan or is there a better way?

Pictures of the Fuller shallop, which is intended to be a replica of the shallop which was aboard the Mayflower, seem to show the jib hanked to the forestay with the sail hoisted by a separate halliard and tacked to the after side of the stem. There may also be a downhaul coiled near the tack. Small rings sound like a reasonable way to attach the luff to the forestay. Just make sure the diameter of the rings is reasonable at the scale of the model. If one guesses that rings would be 2 or 3 inches, a ring would be 1/4" at 1:12 scale, 1/8" at 1:24, and 1/16" at 1:48, etc. Also, your eye will tell you if the rings look similar to the photo.

On the other hand, it is possible that the practice at that time was to set the jib flying on small craft of this sort. While it's harder to get a taut luff that way, there is less chance of things jamming when hoisting or dousing the jib. The topic may be worth some research. Fair winds!
