Thankyou I was thinking that also that it was used for nets but wasn't sureGreetings, Bill. If you’re referring to the image below, the mechanism appears to be a net hauler or line hauler, commonly found on small fishing vessels like the Norden.

Line haulers were typically driven by a small engine or hydraulic motor, and they saved a lot of manual hauling effort, especially in longline or gillnet fishing.
- The black drum/roller grips and pulls in fishing lines or nets.
- The blue blocks are probably rollers or fairleads to guide the rope or net and prevent chafing.
- It’s mounted high and outboard so that the gear being hauled comes directly from the water over the gunwale.
