Black Swan

Gunther! LOVE your dinghy! It came out splendidly! I hope you are making progress on the Athena! I'm signed up watch! Don't keep us in suspense ROTF

Blessings.
Chuck
Hey Chuck,

Many thanks for the kind words. My dinghy isn't finished yet and I hope you'll stay on the ball. I still have the oars, the mast, the bowsprit, the rudder and the sails to do. They are almost finished and I will post new pictures this week. My time window was very limited at the moment. I was on holiday with the family in our beautiful Bavaria and visited Neuschwanstein Castle. Now it's time to get back to work and I'll also be working on my Athena again.

Best regards

Very nice! There is an old navy expression, “ A ship is judged by the quality of its boats.” Your’s is first class.

Roger
Hey Roger,

I think that's great that you like my little dinghy, and thanks for the kind words. I will continue to make an effort to finish this little dinghy.

Hey guys,

just a few pictures from my holiday in Bavaria, Germany. I visited Neuschwanstein Castle there. The story of King Ludwig II of Bavaria is very interesting and unfortunately also sad. But what he left behind is simply beautiful. Disney used Neuschwanstein Castle as the basis for its logo.

Hey guys,

My dinghy needs an anchor, of course, and I have to say that I can't find one on this scale, unfortunately. That's why I tried to build one from solder wire (1.0 mm thick). Of course, it is not yet moulded and drilled and not painted. Mr McRoudy is once again throwing up his hands in horror at my building skills ...

Cheers

I really like your scaled anchor, Günther. Nice ‘out-of-the-box’ invented with the solder wire. I will be a nice detail besides the others on that little dinghy.
Regards, Peter

Hey Peter,

What an honour! Thank you so much for liking my anchor. It's nice that you can use it as a tip.

It's a bit easy to bend, but it holds. I'm going to paint it black and add a rope.

Best regards

Bavaria is beautiful, and I love your castle photos. I hope it’s not too many more years before I have a chance to visit your lovely country again.

Yes my friend. It is so nice....
Bavaria is a federal state with many traditions. This also includes men's Lederhosen. The tradition is very old. :DThumbsup

I think it's very nice that you think it's great. It's also important to me. Because Germany has really beautiful sides.

Best regards

Hey Guy,

Thank you very much for your kind words. I'll keep trying hard. Unfortunately, I have very little time at the moment to devote to the Athena and the dinghy. But I'll have more time soon and then I'll get started.

Thank you very much

Great pictures Gunter! Bavaria and all the European countries have such beautiful landscapes. Keep up the great work on your conversion to the Athena.

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

would like to write a build report on the Black Swan. The kit is from OcCre, is called Black Swan, and is relatively new on the market. It is in 1:75 scale. It has a medium difficulty level and is supposedly ideal for beginners. It has already been presented here in the forum by Jim. I can, of course, do it again if you wish.I will be completely converting the Black Swan into a Royal Navy ship. She will be a proud ship of His Majesty and will strike fear into the hearts of pirates in the Caribbean.Since I will be converting the Black Swan, she will, of course, also be given a different name.

The name of the future ship is Athena!

The Athena is a fantasy ship that bears similarities to the Black Pearl, the Black Swan, the Flying Dutchman, and other vessels. There is no historical evidence for this ship. The design of this ship is not historically documented, but the shipbuilding influences of 17th and 18th-century sailing ships were taken into account during construction. The Athena's construction resembles a galleon.

The ship's design will therefore be modified to be more similar to historical ships of the 17th to early 18th centuries. As mentioned above, my intention is not to build a pirate ship, but rather to design an aesthetically pleasing and majestic Royal Navy ship.

I apologize for any difficulties I encounter as a novice in wooden shipbuilding. Therefore, I ask for your patience and support with this project.

I thank you for the helpful comments and support in this forum.

Sincerely, (the then Queen Mary II)

Best regards

Günther Ship-1

good luck

Hey Sailors,

and here we go again with the Athena. I've finally got my slipway. The first impression looks positive. I have to assemble it and then I can write about whether the investment was worthwhile or not. What is immediately noticeable is the good workmanship.

Here are a few pictures. :D
Best regards

Hey Daniel,

Thank you very much for your kind words. We have some really beautiful landscapes here. I will definitely continue to build and rebuild the Athena...:

It looks much better than Model Expo’s POS slipway. You did well to avoid that.

Hey folks,

I was really looking forward to the slipway from HZ. Here is my first status report.

It should be easy to build models in scales 1 : 100 to 1 : 72 with the HZ slipway. For the larger scales, I would say that it is not sufficient. You could perhaps build a small boat on a larger scale, but I can't judge that. I'm aiming the slipway at modellers who, like me, tend to build at a smaller scale.

The slipway has the ability to rotate a fixed hull through 360°. Of course, the slipway can be used for everything from laying the keel/false keel to erecting the frames/bulkheads, and it can be used simply to hold and rotate a semi-assembled hull while the hull can be planked and fitted in advanced stages of assembly.

The finished unit has the following dimensions:
A length of 100 cm, a width of 25 cm. It can accommodate a keel up to 7 mm thick. It has a measuring height of 22 cm.

Quality of the slipway.
The slipway is made of MDF boards and is a decent 0.8 cm thick, making it very stable and of high quality. All screws and even wing nuts are included in the package.

Not included are:
Cutting knife, scalpel, wood glue, superglue, ruler, clamps.

Quality:
The quality of the slipway is very good. It looks stable and neatly finished.
Assembly/instructions:

Removing the laser-cut MDF tabs was more difficult than I had expected. I had to use the scalpel on the tabs several times and cut them so that they would come loose. That took time and was no fun. I had to sand down all the detached parts after cutting them out to make them look clean and nice. This also took time. The instructions are written in black and white and are very small for my liking. What annoyed me was perhaps that I am also a bit too old, too stupid: the sequence of the building sections and the pictures, which are so unclear. Sometimes I wasn't sure how to put the parts together correctly. So I had to get through it!

Conclusion:

The HZ slipway costs €72.43 without shipping costs. In dollars it is around $85.00 without shipping costs.
The quality is very good and the screws supplied also make a good impression.

I personally did not find the assembly with instructions so good, but possible. I wish there were instructions in colour and that they were larger, or that there was a good video. Unfortunately, I can't yet share my experience with the slipway as I still have to try it out. But I will report on it.

I hope you can understand what I have written. My English still needs to improve. So please accept my apologies. ;)

Here are a few more pictures for you.

Cheers, Günther!Ship-1

Hey folks,

So, now I've finished the slipway and I'm looking forward to working with it.

Of course, the Athena now also has her dry dock and is waiting for my master shipbuilder to finally start work. Mr McRoudy has already scolded me quite a lot about why I'm dawdling around and why I don't want to tackle the pirate threat as quickly as possible.

I've promised him that I'll get on with it now ...

Best regards

Günther Ship-1

If you have any questions about HZ's slipway, feel free to ask.
