Hello friends. I am away from home but brought my Victory cross section build with me. 1/90scale. Trying to finish the rigging but ran out of blocks. I remember seeing a post, not long ago, on how to scratch build them but I am unable to find it in a search.
Can anyone help?

When I wanted some small blocks for gun tackles I bashed a piece of 3x2mm walnut strip through a draw plate with oval holes to round off the corners. After knocking through a bit less than 1mm I sawed a token groove round it, knocked it through a bit more then sliced it off. I had drilled a hole into the end of the strip first,
With a bit of refinement, this process might work for bigger, more conspicuous blocks.

You can refer to my log link for which is in my signature below. It is a long log though. You will have to roll through it starting from the last pages.

Thanks gentlemen. YT, I will page through your log. I believe what I had seen was in your build log. I have been following your log and admiring your excellent work.

Hi John
This sounds very interesting. Can you post some photos of the plate (or a link to where to get it) and blocks made using this technique? I found the following on the internet but it's for drawing wire so does not have a cutting edge which makes me wonder how well this particular plate might work.
Many thanks!
Allan

That looks very much like the item I bought. Although it does not have cutting edges as such, if you bash a piece of wood through then the only bit that can get through is the shape of the hole. In the photos below I knocked a piece of 3x4mm walnut through. in the left hand picture I drilled into the end and cut a notch for the strop round the curve. In the right hand picture the hole has been drilled through the curved side and a strop notch cut across the end. (Better?)
Blocks could be sliced off as the blank progressively emerges.

Thanks for sharing your technique, John.
Do you remember where you got your draw plate?
