Bonhomme Richard - Pear Cross section kit (with scratch duplicate using alder) Unicorn Model

Hello Brad,
I also want to congratulate you on completing your wonderful cross-section of the RB. It's really very meticulous work. Sorry I didn't always follow your report; there's so much to look at, and it's easy to lose track. So, my contribution about the planking nails is coming too late. On French ships, the planks up to the hull are made entirely of iron, and everything below is made of iron and tree nails. Here's a picture of what I mean.

Thanks Tobias! A little late for the BHR cross section!

I am currently working on another French ship, the Bomb Ketch Salamandre, built in Toulon, FR.

I think you are suggesting I need to develop a better understanding of when to use "iron" nails and when to use "iron" nails covered by treenail plugs.

Is it your understanding that "iron" nails by themselves, were used above the waterline??
AND
Below the waterline, the "iron nails were countersunk and covered by treenails??

I appreciate your knowledge and insights!!!

I think he means wales when he says up to the hulls. And I think he means each connection has two iron nails and two treenails. If you look closely at the image, each point of nailing below the wales has two inner dark nails, and just ahead and abaft them are some lighter nails, which I assume are the treenails.

I see the second set of connections, now that you point them out. Thanks!

Wow, daunting to think about doubling the # of holes one has to drill!!

Yeah, I am already terrified of the idea of doing a single set of nails in an entire hull. Leave it to the French to make my life harder.
