I'm trying to build a model of the Discovery1789. She was a civilian ship bought by the Navy right around the time she was launched. Some modifications were done but I don't know how much. So it seems that she is part Navy, part civilian(merchant). There is not much detail in the drawings but there seem to be some anomalies. For example Steele says there should be two riding bitts but none of the drawings show more than one, things like that. It seems that a lot of the ships that the Navy purchased were colliers but I don't even know that for sure. I have Peter Goodwin's "English Man of War" and it is a goldmine of info. Is there a comparable book about civilian/merchant ships?
