BOW BLOCKS

Hello, I was wondering which wood is best to make bow blocks?
Technically you can use any type of materials holding the shape and easy to sand\shape. Basswood, linden wood (commonly used in Russia) even balsawood. What I wouldn't recommend is to use plywood.

I've been experimenting with maple, alder, cherry and poplar. Maple is very dense and harder to sand than cherry. Alder is soft enough to cut and sand but hard enough to keep its shape. So far I like cherry and alder the best; their 20210402_103142.jpg20201120_172622.jpgcolor is good and holds the details of cutting, drilling and sanding.

I have used balsa which is easy to find (any hobby or craft store), relatively inexpensive and very easy to work with. You may want something harder (like basswood) if it needs to hold nails or pins. Balsa is great if you are gluing to it.

so this is what I have decided to go with.......

A bit pricey but hey the shipping is free and I didnt have to go out to get it, besides I live in the countryside no hobby shops here.

Have you check the @Dry-Dock Models & Parts? They have blocks for any size of rigging made of pear and boxwood. The quality is awesome and BTW the service is superb. They are in Canada, local to you...
