I plan on using these brass pedestals for my current ship model. I'm open for recommendations on whether I should sink the screw (see attached pic) right up into the keel or only use a screw long enough to go through the base and just nip the bottom of the keel. What should I do?sdaxfgdf.jpg

I normally cut a slot in the plywood false keel and epoxy a nut into it.I then use 4mm threaded rod through the base of the stand, pedestal, and keel through to the nut.I realise this will not help if you have built the model. If you are retrofitting, you are going to need a very accurate pilot hole that extends well beyond the planking. The screw needs to go as deep as is possible otherwise if the model is knocked accidentally you may end up with the keel splitting on the bottom edge.

Kind Regards

Nigel

Proper depth is important to keep it from being knocked off and damaged.

I do suggest you use a predrilled hole in keel and long narrow screw, so you don't split keel when screwing in.

Not sure if I have the guts to drill any hole even a small one. I might just end up scratching a proper cradle instead. Anyone have a link for plans for a cradle?
