Building a Pinnace

Thanks for all the photos Iutar. More for my own library of boat photos, thank you!

Some contemporary models and drawings show center boards connecting the thwarts or a long board laid on top of them down the center line, some do not. When they are present they are invariably on larger barges and what appear to be pinnaces, but others do have these. Was there any formula or tradition or era that dictated when they would be present or not?

TIA

Allan

This is a bench. Its presence was dictated by the size of the ship's crew and the wishes of the boatswain and captain when ordering the boats. Therefore, there were identical plans with and without benches. These longitudinal benches are never found on longboats. In the pictures I show the drawings where the boats have twin sisters, but without long benches.
I know of at least one boat model that shows people sitting on a long bench. It's a trooper boat, and it has two long benches.
