Very impressive! Perhaps Bluebeard or others could help me in my venture into building the Nauticurso AV-SC96 sub chaser. Thinking this was a "simple" starter, this has been a challenge as a beginner...but sticking with it. I was hoping to see how the servo and battery were installed inside the ship, how the opening for the propeller rod was drilled or opened up, and installation of the rudder in Bluebeard's Build Log. It also appears that the RC kit that comes with the sub chaser is different than what the kit is made for. For example, for the battery to fit, additional cutting out will be necessary and it doesn't fit into the space made for it on its platform. I'm a newbie in using this forum, so hopefully my ignorance isn't offending anyone. Looking forward to a completed project and sharing some good times with my grandson with it.

Has anyone set up the RC version for the subchaser? I would like to see how the large diameter propeller drive shaft can be attached to the small diameter motor armature. I can not find any sort of universal coupling that comes in the shaft diameters.

Great build and log!!! Although I was aware of these little ships I never knew they got so far from home!

Quick question: What brand/color of stain did you use to get that rich color on the deck planks?

Hi Schooner,


For the wood tones, I used Varathane Wood Stain in the color Golden Oak. I lightly sanded the wood, applied a light coat of the stain, let it dry, then applied a second coat to achieve the rich tone. After that, I sealed it with a wood varnish for protection and a smooth finish.

A (hopefully) gentle comment: I believe that the photo that you posted of the Miami Subchaser School and the Donald Duck flag date from World War II, not World War I. According to Wikipedia Donald Duck’s first appearance was in 1934.

There were of course wooden Subchasers too in World War II but of different design.
