I was just watching a video tour of the Victory. They showed Nelsons bed which was a coffin on ropes. The narrator made it sound like this was normal for the Navy but I haven't been able to find any other sites that say this. Was this normal for officers to sleep in their coffin?

Often they used no beds with legs on the floor, but these types of hanging coffins. They are like hammocks which were much more comfortable because of the movements of the ship on the waves.

One additional advantage was, that either the normal seamen hammocks (450 on the Victory), but also this from the officers were foldable and easy removable when the shipo had to get ready for action.

Only Nelson had in addition a real, but foldable bed when the ship was in harbor

not used as a bed it was folded and used as a furniture

Everything was foldable - also the chairs and tables - to be removed completely when there was Action to be expected
