CARLOFORTE SCHIFETTO (Part 1)
1 Introduction
After finishing the St. Patrick (a Galway Hooker), I took a few weeks off and travelled to Stockholm and Cologne. I was planning to make my pilgrimage to Museums related to Naval Modelling, but I ran out of time, taken shopping with my wife and spending time with the grandchildren, well, that will be for next time. Back home I started to study my next models, I have the gunboat America (from the Peruvian Amazon, which saw action in the Caqueta River at the beginning of the last century) on the board and a small model that was already somewhat advanced, I am referring to a “Carloforte Schifetto”, a boat without many pretensions, with dimensions and rigging very common in the Mediterranean, but it is obvious that it is nice and very seaworthy.
The model was taken from the book “Velle Italiane della Costa Occidentale” Sergio Bellabarba and Eduardo Guerreri” pages 204-205, some paragraphs in quotation marks have been taken from the attached references.
“The origins of this boat date back to the mid-nineteenth century and its use lasted until just before the Second World War. The Carloforte Schifetto has both a sharp bow and stern, and an upper part of the hull with the lateral edges inclined outwards and convex that provide good support in the water. The hull has a classic/width ratio of just over 3/1. It was born as a boat used for lobster fishing with traps; the catch was deposited in an internal nursery created in the center of the boat. Later, proving to be a very robust and stable boat, it was adapted for other types of fishing and transport. In general, oak, olive, mahogany, fir, Douglas and Aleppo pine planks were used for construction. While the material used in Carloforte for these hulls was: oak for the keel, Aleppo pine for the frames and maritime pine from Corsica or Tuscany for the planks”
“Armed with a lateen sail with a mast strongly inclined at the bow, which with a three-way hoist raises a long antenna to which the mainsail is attached. The sail is completed with a jib hoisted at the top of the mast and fixed to the bowsprit. In Sardinia it was used, turning it into a container, thus eliminating almost all the structures, to transport the material extracted from the mines of Buggerru”

Schifetto type
FUNCTION: fishing, commerce
Scale 1:25
Total Length 9.70 m (388 mm)
Total Height 11.17 m (447 mm)
Length 6.62 m (265 mm)
Beam 3.05 m (122 mm)
Prop 1.40 m (56 mm)
By Jose Ruesta - Lima, Perú
4. Model Construction
As with some previous models, I took the idea and information from the book “Velle Italiane della Costa Occidentale” by Sergio Bellabarba and Eduardo Guerreri”, from there I obtained the box of frames, the longitudinal profile and with Autocad I drew the frames and the false keel. The other dimensions such as the diameter and length of the mast and yard, dimensions of the sails, position of the moorings, size of the planking, size of the entrance to the hold and other deck elements, I measured directly (with Autocad) from the photos or engravings in said book.
On this occasion, I will not enter the entire work done, but I will do so as I progress. To date I have cut the frames and false keel, which I aligned and glued with white glue. I filled the bow and stern with balsa and then with a knife and sandpaper I shaped to improve the settlement of the strakes at the ends. And I've already glued a few strakes to one side of the hull.
In the photos I show a schifetto in full sail, the pages of Bellabarba's book, and the progress of the work.
