Hello, Ships of Scale! My name is Marc LaGuardia, and for the past three years, I have been extensively bashing the Heller kit in an effort to transform it into what I believe is her re-fit appearance of 1689. The project exists in its entirely, here at Model Ship World...
Well, after a few weeks I had enough of the rigging of Sovereign of the Seas and I put her temporarily on ice. I will come back and finish her sometimes in the near future. So here is the opportunity to start the next project, which I have planned for a long time. This is a complete scratch...
The model is under way... see it in its own thread. Some carvings are done a bit earlier than they can be installed. Here is the first one, the main group on the tafferel. More to come. János

After reading some of the links Uwek provided, I understand that the reason the side galleries differ is that the ZHL and Sergal models followed the 1660's decoration of the ship, and the Artesania Latina model follows the ship design after it was redecorated in 1689. I prefer the 1660's original version of the ship, but the Artesania kit is far more detailed and higher quality hence the price). Since blue pigment was expensive, I am skeptical of the paint scheme on the Artesania model. The ZHL one appears more realistic as far as paint scheme goes. I think it would be interesting to bash the Mantua/Sergal model decorations together with the Artesania model and create the SR as it was originally designed in 1669, making two mode kits into one. One problem is that the Mantua castings quality has degraded seriously over the past 50 years, and as much as the KIR people hate it, the Chinese castings are sometimes better.
Anyone beside Uwek (and the snoopy authoritarian from KIR) have any comments?
Well, the “Keep it Real” zealots thought that this post was tantamount to supporting Chinese model kit piracy and promptly banned me from Model Ship World forum. Their action was based on the assumption that I was endorsing buying a product from ZHL, which has copied deigns from some older models in the past. They stated that my membership here with you fine fellows was equal to consorting with pirates, because Max Zheng is a member here, and even though I have never bought a kit from ZHL, the fact that I support this forum makes me equally guilty of copyright fraud, and that includes each and every one of you. I am the latest casualty in their crusade, and these few KIR authoritarians will persecute and belittle anyone OUTSIDE their forum with impunity for even mentioning ZHL or the kits they sell. It didn’t matter that the kit under consideration in this post’s comparison was second hand, or even that I haven’t purchased or that the question on kit design and features was not even on their forum.
Their attitude is that everyone who does not fall into ranks with their beliefs is doing direct harm to the model kit business and should be attacked, and they don’t have the courage to contact those they attack for information before calling them to be banned. Even an appeal stating that their tactics are harming good builders and suppliers are rejected out of hand. According to them, my active participation here alone endorses kit piracy. And fellows apparent share my “guilt”.
So raise the colors of the Jolly Roger, boys! Yer all pirates now, mateys! Aaaarrrrr!!!!
