A few months ago I started a Build from Scratch with Plans a 1:50 scale Plank on Bulkhead model of the Flying Fish. Today, I removed all the Bulkheads and started over---Bulkheads crooked, out of alignment and not consistent in size shown on the Plans.

One of other passions is History. I live in Florida (Bonita Springs) and have done reading on the History of the State of Florida. One of the interesting facts about, besides the Conch Republic of Key West is The Bonnie Blue flag and The Republic of West Florida. The first recorded use of this flag (typically with a white star) was in 1810 when it was used to represent the Republic of West Florida, a republic of English-speaking inhabitants in parts of Louisiana east of the Mississippi River who rebelled against the reign of Spanish government and overthrew Spain's district governor, Carlos de Hault de Lassus, at Baton Rouge. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Because of the Bonnie Blue and The Republic of West Florida, I am changing the name of my Flying Fish to The Star of Florida.

I always find it interesting how much local history there is that I know nothing about. I have lived in Florida for most all of my life and again I just learned something new.

I truly admire your research into the history. Being a resident SW of Florida, it was especially interesting for me.
Looking forward to your build log.

Finally got all the bulkheads sized and lined up. The pictures show a mess of wood that will be covered by planking and decking. One thing I discovered, I was using CA glue until I remembered a Hot Glue Gun stuck away in the closet. Does a GOOD job of joining wooden pieces that will be covered, it's also easier on the fingers.
Also, gave The Star of Florida a different stern and bow shape. You can say I'm staying true to my past builds and personalizing it. Also planning a double hull build because I'm finishing it in Mahogany and copped plates.IMG_20250128_155546_044.jpgIMG_20250128_155552_726.jpgIMG_20250128_155534_610.jpg

  1. Today's been very hard. The problems are building a bulkheads model in a condo after a hurricane and losing my tools.
  2. Today I made scale models of the deck fixtures -- cabins, hatches, water closets and steering boxes.
  3. Why is the pilot of the ship always stand next to the Steering box, instead of behind the wheel like a modern yacht?
  4. Should be able to start planking the the first hull using bamboo strips
  5. Will be applying bamboo with hot melt glue.
