OFF MY RANT HAVE SOMETHING THAT I NEED TO ASK, AS MOST OF YOU KNOW I AM A COMPUTER ILLETERATE, I MAY NEED A NEW COMPUTER HOPE NOT BUT PROBALLY IF I GET A NEW ONE will all my POSTS AND ESPECIALLY THE RESPONCES STILL BE AVAILABLE TO ME. THANKS Don

Yes they are stored on site.

Yes, the computer is simply a tool you use to access a website, the website itself is unchanged. Before you go to the expense of buying a new computer check that your old one does not need a new flint.

Progress!☹️ Recently heard they are stopping support for Windows 7 early next year. Not wanting to risk updating my perfectly good PC to Windows 10 (after hearing all the horror stories of lost files), I have just got a new (2nd hand) PC with Windows 10 in it for just over £100. Have been copying files over into it. But as I thought, some of my old software will not work in 10, so they expect me to purchase more - No chance! Tomorrow, I will be putting the new one in service, and putting the old one elsewhere for use as a "storage hulk" that will never be connected to the internet. It still has 456Gb storage space left in it, so I will be able to continue to use it for special things such as photo editing/writing etc, and copying files to it from the replacement PC every month for safe storage. It seems to me that progress in electronics (and probably everything else) is to "improve" things by making them more user-unfriendly, and each new piece of equipment must be slightly (if not greatly) harder to use than that which it replaced! And above all, make sure that it cannot be repaired easily, and virtually impossible to physically open without specialist knowledge! Whilst not forgetting that it should be absolutely essential that it becomes obsolete within a few months and breaks down within a week of the guarantee expiring!.

Please, Bob, don't get me started on this subject.

Hi GRAHAM, WHAT IS A FLINT, REALLY DO NOT WANT TO BY A NEW ONE, I just need this one about 8 years old tuned up, but my daughter says just to tune it up at best by is OVER $200.00, she said i can get a new one for almost the same price, as i said i know nothing about computers i can barely turn this one on LOL, so in the dark as to what to do what is happening is sometimes maybe every other day when i open it it has no mail and i ca not move anything the diagnostics says they can not find the trouble and sometimes it says not conected to the internet but i am conected to the internet so what i have to do is turn it off by pushing the button then restarting it it then lets me do things. Hi

If you have an old PC ( win 7 or less) and you don't update any apps and surf the net safely then win 7 support is irrelevant.

If you purchase a new PC with a Intel series 8 or higher CPU then bad luck your stuck win 10 as Microsoft decided in its one wisdom to remove support for newer cpu's in windows 7 ( its just away to force you to upgrade to win 10)

Your choice is therefore :

A:give up using a PC ( not going to happen)
B:Buy a apple based PC ( expensive)
C: Go Linux ( there are lots of versions and apps that are free and is relatively virus/nasty free- its just another learning curve )
D: Suck it up and suffer the windows 10 debacle.

I still run windows XP on a laptop for managing my telescope because its never connected to the net and works fine. ( will never need win / support or XP support)
I have a really old 2008 mac that I use everyday. still does all my surfing & reseach and runs an old unsupported OSX.
I have a rasperry pi to drive the CNC running linux.
I have a newish gaming PC ( with windows 10) for gaming..

WINDOW 7 WILL STOP IN Januar 2020. so I am in the same situation. I talked to my Computer expert, and he said, Window will nor disappear from your computer and stop working. The main thing is, that one will not get updated in the future from Microsoft. I will wait and see what effect has, before changing to new computer with Window 10 and to learn to use it. If it should change in the future, I will as you, still use my old one as back-up pf old data and to use the programs that does not funtion with Window 10

I went through a total rebuild of my main work station windows7

all my programs were running on 32bitt windows7 I could not update to windows7 64 bitt without replacing all my programs nor go to windows10 because it is a 64 bitt operating system.
if your computer is a stand alone work station it will go on and on even if windows stops support heck on another work station I am still running windows 2000

I am past all that now - I have given up. Last night, I felt that I was close to sorting it all out. This morning, it was empty. All the files, all the programs that I had laboriously put in over the past two days were gone. I had not actually lost anything, as I had copied them from a separate hard drive into the new PC, so they are still safe. At 1830 today, I removed the new computer, and put the old Windows 7 back, and what a pleasure it is to have something running smoothly again. I am finished with Windows 10. I guess if the two new British aircraft carriers can manage on Windows XP, Widows 7 is good enough for me!:)
I just don't have the patience for this sort of thing.
The last two days were like my final year at sea. It was like that every day, trying to sort out all the electonic "junk" that was aboard, and it was a brand new ship as well! I finally quit that as well and walked away from the "rat race" back in late 1992!

I remember the time when people hate Windows 7 and didn't want an upgrade from Windows XP... in fact, the same story happened when Microsoft released Windows XP and users didn't want to give up Windows 98... Am I sound too old folks?
With all respect, I cannot justify using an old outdated OS\PC. Yes..., most-likely it will support the old programs you pay for the licenses, it will still run your old printer (parallel cabling), it may have the best ever sticker "core 2 duo", but it will most likely run like a turtle. The new modern computer technology is a hundred times faster, it can support multi-core central processing units (CPU), large capacity hard drives and bulk of RAM (memory)., not to mention Bluetooth technology. How about that!!!! The best new technology introduced - is Solid State Drive (SSD)! It is run much faster than HDD. People who deal with graphics\CAD\Photos will benefit from SSD instantaneously! Yea! 3D rendering should be a snap...
However, Windows XP, as well as Windows 7, cannot natively support the newest hardware\software. New software (applications) designed in mind for modern Operating Systems. Why not use and benefit from it???

Personally I like Windows 10. It doesn't give me a hard time since day 1, the day I have installed it. It does have cons and pros, but this topic is for a different forum, thought.

I don't need all the high tech stuff with massive memory. I only require a basic word processing system such as Microsoft Word 2000 and Apache Open Office, plus basic photo-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 2. If these things will not work in Windows 10, it is no good for me! As for CAD, I really can't be bothered, pen and paper with a little bit of photo editing is good enough for me!:D
Even kits are too complicated for me!

I fully agree with YOU -and some others - that Windows 7 is good enough for me -had some problems, when I switch from XP (BY FAR TO ME THE BEST PROGRAM), I had a short time windows 10 in my Computer -installed free of charge about 2 years ago by Microsoft, but had to be installed and go back to Window 7. the main problem I will shortly have is when I WILL HAVE TO CHANGE COMPUTER. (the one I have is bow rather OLD) here you can only get one by Window 10, and by having to learn how to use it.-meaning buying a book about Window 10 and how to use it correctly. Anyway not before 2010 and I have a very good Computer shop a few hundred meters away, BUT WILL NOT THROUGH MY OLD AWAY. Use it as an external hard disk, and all the programs that will not work properly with the 10-4
I do every week (2 external harddisks 500 GB each) a fully Backup of my own datas changing from one to another. I have ones in my professional life had a total breakdown VIRUS attach. the two hard disks are both USB HARDDISK so only connected to the computer to make the backup, to avoid virus etc from the NET AND A 1TH CLASS virus program

Wow, I’m having a great time reading all these comments. I thought I was the only one with a dislike of Windows 10. I upgraded one of my small towers to Win 10 from Win 7 when MS was offering the free upgrade. That caused many days of frustration trying to get various pieces of software to run. As result I reformatted and reloaded Win 7.

My software shelf still has all my versions of Windows, ie. Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 for workgroups, Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win XP and Win 7. Most of these Operating Systems are on harddrive shuttles and can be loaded into one of my old towers. I’ve kept a few old laptops because of CPU and RAM requirements of some of the older Operating Systems (I even have an old WANG laptop with a build in printer) .

I finally have given up on Microsoft and I’m happily exploring the world of Apple. My very first computer was an Apple IIe many many years ago, so I guess with my recent purchase of a MAC I’ve come full circle.

Happy Computing,

Jan

...looks like I am the only one like Windows 10 :p I work in IT (specifically dealing with desktops and servers) for a very long time. I do remember first PC based on 380DX. I specifically omitted too much technical detail, to make this post readable by many of us. Everyone has its own opinion and preference. It is great you can run any OS you like and will be happy with! Just make sure you understand EOL (End Of Life),they will stop supported by EOL. And...doesn't matter what OS you are running, make sure you have a full backup of your documents and valuable photos!! ;)

I agree with you 100% about backups, trying to recover data, etc. can be quite the chore without them. I have two USB 1 TB backup drives, one one my Mac and one on my Dell Tower. I spent years as a WAN/LAN manager and could write several books on data recovery, restoration and user system frustration.
