Hi, out there.
I'm building, from scratch, a Pilot Boat, originated back to the 19. century. So far I've managed to make all parts by my own, but ran in to a problem:
In the rigging there is used a reinforcement device in the rope loops ,(I don't know the name of it), and I'm having problems searching on the net, It has the shape of an deadeye, but only one big hole in it. See scetch and pic. I've made most of them to my model, but when the needed size came down to 3 mm dia, my eyes and tools where not good enough (sight!).
So: Is there anyone out there who knows what I'm looking for, and if it can be obtained somewhere?

I also used 3 mm bras eyelets by Flying Fish-Corel for rigging and fixed them directly on the sail.
Instead of punching holes I made small holes by pushing the yarns away from eachother to make a fake hole and pushed the eyelet thru this fake hole.If you make the holes by punching there is no return and damages the textile.after inserting you have to hammer very gentle on the narrow side of the eyelet until you reach the same diameter as the oppsite side. If you use a 2 piece insertable eyelet it is easier of course.Good Luck

Thanks for your tip on how to make the holes. I've got a piece of cloth where I try out different techniques to make sail fittings and sewing. Will try out your tip.

After inserting the eyelet and before starting gentle hammering you should increase the tubular end of the eyelet using a thick nail or a tool like on the attachment. In case using thinner sail textile you have to shorten the tube length by sanding or else.

There are also special pliers to fix the eyelets but imho for small eyelets (3 mm or below) hammering is a better choice.
Hint: the hammer movement direction from inside to outside from tthe center of the eyelet
