However during the time of friedrich wilhelm zu pferde, which is a Dutch build ship, they used what the had. Planks were not yet standardized as in the 18th century and planks were used as they say in Dutch " zoals ze uit de bijl vallen" as they fall out of the axe. Every plank is different in length and even width. You can see that also in the decks of the Vasa of which the top deck is actually a replacement and not the original.
Yes you can color the sides of the planks with a black marker. Do this on only one side, otherwise the black lines will be to thick. So every plank on one long and one short side.
Hallo Pat,
unfortunately we can not see realy what you are showing us on the attched photo, so I think your question (if it is a question) can not so easily answered.....
Usually deckplanking is lighter in appearance, due to weathering and the daily swabing of the deck.....
See herewith what zum mondfeld is writing about deck planking. Hope you can read German.
As the decks were mostly from pine it should be light in colour.
Holly is often used for deck planking, although it is probably too white for that. The explanation is that deck planking was often hollystoned but I think it caused the deck planking loosing its colour rather than making it white. Something like the limewash effect. I personally gave up using Holly for this purpose after building a few ships.
