Hi friends of the ships of the 17. Century
In October Waldemar posted "Hampton Court 1678 - perfectly generic design". It was my plan of the Witon house Model he used.
A lot of Years ago I talk about the model and the plan of it and the problems with the name Hampton Court with John Franklin.
After our talking John Franklin send me a copy of the original Wilton House Plan.
The opinion of some Experts was the Model could be a draft for the ships Lenox, Hampton Court and Stirling Castle. But if we compare
some details so we will see that there are some mistakes, the not fit to the time of the 70 gun ships of the 1677 establishment.
There was the letters of William the III. and Mary on the model and only William III. on the plan. Also the quarter gallery show
us a little later time and on the uper deck below the fore castle was only two gunports. Hampton Court, Lenox and
Stirling Castle show thre gun ports, like all other 70 gun ships of this time. So I am thinking like John Franklin do, the ship was made
around 1690 as present of the Earl of Pembroke. It could be possible that John Shish used the original plan for his thre ships and make
a modification what fit to 1690. It could be that the old plan he used for the model was named Hampton Court.
But I dont like to talk about the problems because it makes more sense to show a plan of the Hampton Court, I made 1985 after the
Van de Velde drawings of that ship. You can compare my drawings with them of Van de Velde and then you will find the difference
to the Wilton House model.

Willi, I will take this opportunity to thank you again for making these plans available, via Martes. Any such plan or sketch, whether in design or decorative convention, from this early period is extremely valuable.

Thanks.

I am thinking of building HMS Lenox. I have the book with plans, which I bought in Portsmouth 10 years ago or so. I was wondering if anyone else had made extra research and already drew some something.

Which Lenox? If the one launched in 1678 there are probably no contemporary plans. Is your book The Restoration Warship by Richard Endsor? He is one of my favorite researchers, artists, and writers. (Sorry to be off track from the Hampton Court.) For her lines/body plan the drawing of the Elizabeth (70) 1706 might be helpful. It can be found on the RMG Collections site in low resolution but it can also be found in very high resolution on the Wiki Commons site on page 1. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Ship_plans_of_the_Royal_Museums_Greenwich

Thanks.
Yes I meant The Restoration Warship by Richard Endsor.
Just got an email from him pointing me to Willi Meischl
and for the link!
