Hi.
I'll share something with you friends. I've been hand-grinding-sanding a lot lately. Small proxxon tools aren't that loud - pen sander, disc sander, dremel tool don't make big noise, but using a vacuum cleaner to clear that dust for a long time is inconvenient for other family members, and doing it in the evening or even in the middle of the night is practically impossible, that's why i sand a lot by hand at night, and dust flies everywhere which starts to cause me problems.

I came up with a simple but brilliant idea, just added a 220V 12W bathroom fan with an air flow of 150m3/h to furnance air filter BOX with EU5 1uS cadridge, also i added a switch to it, it works when I want it to. Effect is powerful, it completely sucks in all dust from above the desk, and it's incredibly quiet. The entire cost of the project is 45€.
It is not suitable for extracting dust from big or heavy tools, but for manual cleaning it works perfectly, it sucks all the dust out of the air and you don't need to wear a dust mask. You can use it all night instead of a vacuum cleaner, its zero noice build.
I'll try to modify it somehow more, maybe carbon filter or second lower desk pipe, now it is 1.5m above desk and it does its job.

I'm posting this patent because it might be useful to someone.
Kuba.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a car vacuum cleaner? They come with a blowing function, you can use it to clean dust from the model.
Maybe yes for collecting dust from desk, for filtering dust from air i don't think it will work. I'm more concerned about dust that flies around desk and lands on everything.

Interesting. I also need a quiet dust extractor when working with my mini power tools in an apartment. I wonder if anyone tried this? How quiet is it? Seems to be super cheap. 1.5 HP should not be able to run too loud.

Anyways for such a price I just had this thing ordered. I will post my findings here when I get it. Walmart delivers very quick, so we will not wait for long.

Test it. Even if I had to keep it on desk top, this solution would be good to get rid of dust in long term use.

I received it. It has very powerful suction. Very good to pick up some sawdust and such. It is as noisy as any other vacuums however. It is not for continuous use because of that. Very small compact machine. I will keep it.

Just test it. Any equipment is useful, but i was worried about this sound. I definitely prefer silence. It can even function as ventilation, the effect is as it should be.

I love the dust collection unit you made to collect dust at the point of origin, while carving, grinding, and sanding! The bathroom fan must be super quiet and collects 90% of the dust you make! I will have to look into this for the area where I hand sand/carve!

I added one of these "whole room" dust collection units for $150. It helps reduce the dust on horizontal surfaces to almost nothing...I highly recommend it.

WEN whole room air filter

I know that there are good ready filters, but i don't have possibility to mount anything on slanted wall in this room. That's why there are two options, either on the desk or on the beam above the desk.

I bought a desktop dust collector through Amazon from Oukeeto for $150. I think it will be convenient and therefore get used frequently.” It is quiet and works well especially when I am using a sanding drum in the hand-held rotary tool.Screenshot 2025-06-07 at 10.30.57 AM.png

Hello YT, Have you thought of setting it up remote from your work area with a long extension hose or even outside within a weather proof box with the hose coming through the wall?
