I am asking as to the question of the diameter of rigging thread sold by suppliers.
Now one would assume that if a thread is sold as a .25mm dia then it is .25mm dia or close to.
I have been informed by a supplier that thread sold, the diameter is determined by weight and not by actual diameter. This was the reply given when questioned as to why it was not at the sold diameter
Has any one else came across this problem with suppliers of thread

Kit supplied rope is rarely, if ever, the diameter stated. And to add to this confusion a lot of the time it is not marked as to what size it actually is or supposed to be. How you measure the rope is also a big factor, just running a piece of rope through your calipers is not accurate. To do this properly wrap the rope around something, let's say ten wraps, measure the width of the wraps and divide by ten. Now you will have a more accurate idea of the diameter of the rope.
The only real solution is to make your own rope or to buy higher quality rope.
If you think you maybe interested in making your own rope there just happens to be a excellent rope walk for sale at a great price here on SoS, and it is located in Australia!! Contact @Brian077 for more details and check the for sale items on the home page.

Another concept of rope size is the relationship of the various rope sizes to each other on the model...such that a thick or heavy rope appears correct beside a thinner rope. Relationships rather than accuracy if the diameter of the rope. This seems to be the rationale of many kit supplied ropes.
